Help with yorkies bad breath :/ My dogs have clean teath but have bad breath, my vet says their teeth are good, anybody else have this problem and figured a way subside the bad odor? |
I'm definitely going to follow this thread, as I have the same question! :D |
No one wants to help!! Lol |
Piper's groomer brushes her teeth which helps somewhat...I also use a dental spray from Nylabone called Advanced Oral Care Dental Spray (with denta-C) which Piper pretty much hates. However, since I only use it when we're going out or when company's-a-comin' she bounces up readily as I shake bottle (I don't fake her out with stuff she finds unpleasant) She knows the sooner she comes and sits next to me, the sooner we're "....Allllll done...!" and then it's on to the fun stuff. Per directions, I spritz each side of her mouth while her mouth is closed. There are also additives to drop in water dish and that seems a popular option. |
I brush their teeth when we get up in the morning before I head to work they have the water additive in the water bowl. I will try the spray see if that helps. They use to sell these breath minta at Walmart for dogs that really helped but I haven't seen any lately. |
If you brush their teeth every morning, and have gotten them a dental recently (within the past year or two) it could be a digestive issue. I had a foster who still had pretty bad breath after a dental and I mentioned it to the vet. That was what he told me, it could be coming up from the digestive tract not necessarily bacteria in the mouth. |
Hmmm your exactly right........ I did switch their dog food..... Maybe a better brand thanks ;)........ |
my girl hates having her teeth brushed but my groomer suggested a tiny amount of pet kiss water additive weekly. luckily when she had her spay, she had a cleaning and my vet said her teeth actually looked good. |

Piper's breath isn't horrible by any means, but she gets 'chicken' breath on occasion...Do you think an additive is necessary or should I stick with the "as we go" dental spray? By the way, how is that beautiful Emma? I think she is just the most darling girl. |
Hi! I thought her breath was decent to begin with but yes this really takes away any doggie breath. It says to use daily but I only use a couple of times a week. Ella is our angel, thank you! Piper is beyond precious too!!! |
The bad breath has to come from something so either your vet isn't looking close enough (and btw, you can't diagnose "good teeth", really, without an xray) or there is some other issue. Could it be GERD? See the GERD thread in the Health Library. I'd also get a dental opinion from another vet or a vet dentist. I use Healthy Mouth for mine. |
Btw- my vet just noted that bc of whatever type of rope chew toys Ella is using that she doesn't have any visible plaque, tartar or bad breath. (To clarify) |

Gianni' breath needs holy water! I love Gianni , but omg because he is a love bug..he wants to kiss like all the time..but I just can't handle it anymore. His breath is so bad it's like the devil crawled out of his mouth and dusted himself off..and holy water won't rid him..my eyes tear up sometimes when he licks me..I love him so I have to set there and take it..I make the whole family take it..cuz I don't want him to get his feelings hurt..I brush his teeth, groomer does to..vet saids he ok..I give the little vitmins and dental care in one snack..I just don't know what else to do..👹.he's only 2...my other 2 dogs are fine..I have tried everything on the market for dogs dental..what kind of toothpaste works or suggestions..people who don't have yorkie so don't understand, there like oh don't you brush his teeth Bobbie..I'm like yup every day, like I'm a bad mom..thin I say he's a yorkie, you didn't no they are breed with that defense mechanism..they always reply what bad breath to word predictors so he must feel threatened...I just go with it,thin I tell them after they are all believers..I'm like I know you don't believe that, I was being sarcastic..they feel real stupid..SCORE, say something about my baby again..I'm taking him to another vet..that devil has to stay down there in hell.. Thank you Bobbie and Gianni.. |
How long has it been since he had a dental? He could have a rotten tooth or two, that is why his breath is so bad. Toto's breath is really bad. I'm sure he has a bad tooth somewhere. He hasn't had a dental in about 2 years. Time to take him back in. |
Macy has awful breath too. We brush every day and she gets a dental once a year. Went to the vet today and she thinks she has an infection on her chin so she said to try some antibiotics. She keeps getting food stuck in her lady beard by the corner of her mouth. We will see what happens. |
Do you feed them any people food? My older Yorkie has gotten people food in the past (mostly before I got him) and my puppy does not get people food except an occasional accident that falls on the floor. My daughter's puppy was given people food by my mom when my daughter was there. The older yorkie has horrid breath. My daughter's puppy has medium breath but my puppy does not have bad breath. Coincidence? Maybe, but I am going to continue to not let my puppy have people food. My daughter's does not get it now, except if she goes to my mom's house to visit and even then we tell my mom not to feed her, but she doesn't listen. Something for people with a new puppy to consider. Maybe if they never have people food their breath won't be bad like my puppy so far. He is 9 months old, so it might not continue, but I enjoy it so far. He really doesn't have bad breath like the other dogs in the house do. The other puppy is not as bad as the older dogs, but there is a difference. |
Chewie has recently developed bad breath too, was wondering if it could be teething?? I read somewhere it could be but don't know if that is true. I try to brush his teeth but he makes it extremely difficult. Thinking a trip to the vet soon! |
Didn't need holy water after all... HI everyone..I went to the dentist myself..took Gianni with me because he is a service dog because I have low sugar...after my dentist who is a dog lover cleaned my teeth..I told him about Gianni and I brought his dog toothpaste and equipment..I told him look maybe you can help us vet has cleaned his teeth I brush his teeth everyday. And his defense mechanism is working..I wanna run..omg..lol..dr couldn't stop laughing..thin he said let me look at him..he pulled a piece of meat out..and thin him and his tech put something to hold his mouth open and used his equipment and cleaned them..well it's been 2 days and still smells good..thank god it wasn't more serious..after vet cleaned and I brushed still smell bad..🙂🐻so happy...my baby is kissable again and I don't even put up a fight... |
