New to This Yorkie world. Hi everyone!! I have just joined Yorkie talk! I got my first yorkie puppy recently! Her names Lilly, shes 4 months old. She already makes my life so much better, shes healthy, active and very loving. There are some things that get me worried like her biting sometimes. for example, she will find somethings like a sock to chew on and will go under the couch so i cant find her, and when i go grab her she will try nipping at my hand. Even at times she will just run away when i try and catch her and when i try to get he she will try biting. Is this her playing? or should i b worried? she waits for me to come chase her and will run. Oterwise shes a sweet girl and im happy with her. also is there any advise on anything you want to give me with having a new yorkie, id love to know more. Im looking forward to knowing more about you all and your beautiful yorkies. |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk and congratulations on your new love Lilly! It's common for puppies to use their teeth, but they need to learn bite inhibition. Teddy used to gently bite me when I groomed him. When Max was a puppy, he thought nibbling my toes in the morning was fun. I taught them "no bite" and they stopped. You can fold your hands across your chest to remove the targets. Yelp like dog when she does bite or say "ouch!" Also work on "come" and "sit" so that you don't have to grab her. The earlier you work on basic training, the better. They learn faster as pups. Use lots of praise and rewards and make training fun. |
For the most part it is typical puppy behavior. When puppy starts nipping just let out a little yelp. They will learn they are hurting you and will stop. I do this when Duchess gets a little too rough when we are playing but it's my fault too. I have a bad habit of playing with Duchess with my hands like fake boxing and wrestling on the floor (which she loves highly recommended. get down on the floor and play with them, they love it.) and she tries to grab my hands with her mouth and will nip me occasionally. We get to playing and chasing each other and she will accidentally bite down. Most of the time her mouth is open like she is going to nip me but she doesn't do it except every now and then she will bite if she is really worked up. As for running away, in her mind it's play time. No worries, you have a typically adorable yorkie puppy. |

In no time you will be having lots of fun with your new best friend. Here we use home cooked chicken breast pieces for reward and always works wonders ! Congratulations on your new friend and enjoy ! Puppy years go by very fast ! You will be missing these days next year ! Blessings. Xoxo |
I only "chase" Piper when we're playing the I'm Gonna Get Ya game because, trust me, if she's truly trying to get away from you, she'll always win and that's not a good lesson for her! She sounds like a very healthy, normal puppy who is going to try everything in order for her to find her way in the world! Enjoy every precious minute with patience and humor! |
lol I remember when my girl was first trying to chew on me and I got her to learn my "negative" sound which is "EHH!" kind of a loud grunt/word, kind of a an alternative yelp version. But also when I play with her, I mimic my hands like a mouth and play gently with her, I sometimes even mimic with my actual mouth as I'm "mouthing" her with my hands/fingers. She has learned to be very gentle in mouthing me and the only time she gets a little firm (but still doesn't get too terribly rough) is when I'm doing something she really doesn't like... like trying to put socks on her, trim her paws, put her arms through clothing, or nail trimming. But she's fine if I'm massaging her paws or brushing or petting them >_>;; The only time her bites actually hurt is if foods involved, like she gets really excited to eat the treat, she'll bite me in the process. But I know it's not intentional so i don't get on to her too badly. I just learn to work around that. I present the back of my hand while holding the treat (as bad as it sounds it's not a hitting thing :P lol) and she'll gently work her way around my hand to the treat. |
