Maturity timeline My baby girl is weighing in at 4.8 lbs at 5 months. Her parents were 3.5 (dad) and 6 lbs (mom). The breeder claimed to think she would only gain another lb or so, and my vet just said that she'll definitely be under 10 lbs. When are yorkies typically done growing? What do you guys *think* she might end up weighing fully grown? Also, when is too late to tape ears? I'm not sure if I need to, bc it's just the tips of the ear that droop, the rest is up...am I correct in assuming that they should stand up just fine on their own? TIA for any and all input!!! 😊 |
They generally stop growing much at about 6 mths or so. I would guess your girl would still fill in a bit, so my guess is around 5.5-7 lbs. If the ears are starting to flop - yup, I'd tape them ASAP. |
Thanks so much! I got up this morning & guess what? Ears are UP!!! |
She probably won't get much bigger. Maybe fill out a bit and put on a little weight. Mine are 9 months old today and they have not grown much at all since the 6 months mark. My daughter's girl puppy has put on less than 1/2 a lb since they were at the vet 3 months ago. My male puppy though has gained about a lb since then and has really filled out nicely. He is a very solid boy and even though he is smaller than his sister he weighs about a half a pound more than her. She is a taller and leaner frame than him. Your puppy should be mostly grown at this point though. Mine grew just a little from 5-6 months of age, but not much at all. I am glad her ears are up! Mine have floppy ears but I will not tape them, they are adorable as they are anyway. |
Did you do anything or did her ears stand up on their own? My baby is floppy ear and 15 lbs! They fluctuate a little but stop growing too dramatically around 6 months :) |

As for the ears, when puppies teeth the ears can go up and down. Keep the hair shaved on the tips of her ears and that will help her keep them up. You can also add around 1/4 teaspoon of unflavored gelatin to her food and that will help also. You can buy that at Wal-mart in the jello section. Most people say that if the ears are not up by 6 months it is to late to tape but I have read of instances where pups ears were taped at a later age and they stayed up. I really think it depends on the size of the pups ears and the thickness of them. |

Bloodlines that go back 6-9 generations, not just mom and dad! That is why a knowledge of pedigrees is so important. EVERYTHING about that baby depends on what is carried there! |
