so worried So my almost 6 month Chewie keeps hacking and gagging like trying cough something up. At first I wrote it off as he found a crumb on the floor that irritated his throat or playing too hard etc., but since it's been going on for awhile I made an appointment for tomorrow and then today he starts wheezing and more pronounced hacking. I really hope it's nothing serious, I'm terrified and will probably get no sleep tonight. I just want to take him in now. |
I'm sorry your baby isnt feeling well. A vet visit is a wise idea! Keep us posted! Will be praying your baby and you :) |
Thank you. Now he is drooling and his whole little face is wet. If anyone knows anything about what I should do please let me know. He is sleeping peacefully but I am really freaked out. |
Does he have any allergies or has he been anywhere that he could have picked up kennel cough, get to the vet as they can check him out but try not to worry to much. Our little Lottie got kennel cough from going to a dog training class and our vet recommended tixylix and it worked don't get the sugar free one as it has xylitol in it. They vet may give him Benadryl but best speak with them first. |
I take him some places but nothing dog specific like a dog park, and outside of our yard I always hold him since he's so tiny. I have taken him to pet stores though not lately, and always held him but I guess there is still a chance of kennel cough. I've never come across this situation and now I'm freaking out and want to get to the vet now :/ |
I just keep thinking what if its collapsed trachea?? :/ |
Try not to get too worried the fact that he is sleeping peacefully is good you can call your vet for advice and they may tell you what to give him meantime, do a search on here for kennel cough or for first age measures there are good resources and people with a wealth of knowledge like Yorkimom 1 to Lady Jane who can give you more advice. |

How long has he been like this ? |
As far as I can tell the drooling started today. I noticed his face was greasy, or so I thought, so I gave him a bath. Well, his little face never completely dried and I was baffled, but thought again he was just being a little doggy getting his face wet from drinks etc. Tonight before I went to bed he started hacking alot like he was going to throw up, so I decided we should go to bed for the night so he could relax. Then I noticed his blanket was damp and that's when I finally figured it out, but it had gotten significantly worse after going to bed. |
Check his gums to see if they are pink , if they are white and sticky he could be dehydrated . |
His gums look normal, and his drool is clear but seems thick if that makes sense. |
When is your vet appointment , try and take note of when his problem started and any information you can think of , if he had any different type of food or treat , if he was chewing any toys or chew sticks , before it all, started , if he has been sick or poohed take a sample if it with you so your vet can get a full picture if what is going on with him, but stay calm. |

That good the he ate and kept it down, and that you have an appointment early in the morning. You will fell better once you have been to the vet and I'm sure that more people with good knowledge will post some advice for you , take care and try not to panic , take a not of any changes to him until then and good luck with everything , keep yes posted on how he gets on. |
The drooling could just be from teething. As far as the coughing / hacking - I'd be looking at both kennel cough and GERD. Do you give him the kennel cough vaccine, bc that vax can actually cause the illness itself. GERD: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...wallowing.html |
Vet said his physical exam was okay and gave him a shot to stop drooling and another for nausea. He told me I needed to call off work today and keep an eye on him and bring him back if he gets worse in case of poisoning. As of right now his drooling has seemed to stop, and he is trying to run through the house like his crazy self and doesn't want to sit down. Fortunately I live on the same street the vet office is on. |
I don't know who I feel more badly for...you or your little guy?! One of my felines started drooling (similar to what you describe) and turned out he had an abscess--went away as quickly as it appeared. Could Chewie have gotten something stuck in his throat that scratched it or some such? Keep us posted on how Chewie and YOU are doing. You poor little thing--I totally get your terror and upset over this episode, but nice work in observing his symptoms and in quick vet visit! |
Hope everything is well with Chewy. |

The sheer number of things it could be alone was overwhelming, and even though he seems to be okay of course I am still worried lol. I'm thinking about changing vets as well, I'm not sure if I'm just be overly sensitive but I don't feel they examined Chewie very well. No temp check, barely looked in his little mouth... again I know there are a lot of possibilities of what it could be and that makes it hard to narrow down, but I still question it. Thanks for the response, as this is the first time the doggie isn't a family pet but my baby, it was horrible. However it was good to help me be more prepared for future issues that could happen (but I hope they don't!). |

These little ones keep us on our toes, when one of mine was a puppy he used to pick up all sorts in the street and down the beach and try to eat it, he is the one that the fussy eater ! I'm glad that Chewy is fine and that you are feeling better about things, it could be his little baby teeth are coming out try and get into brushing his teeth daily as it helps to be able to look in his mouth , know what it normally looks like and gets him used to being handled around his mouth, plus it keeps his teeth in good condition and you can check if any of the baby ones are starting to come out or new ones coming in. |
Bella had a hacking cough that was tough to get put behind, but it finally went away. I think at that age, they are really at risk to this cough. But the vet trip is still the right call! |
Phew-amundo that the little goofball is alright! I am truly fortunate in that I've had the same vet for over (gulp) twenty years; love and trust her completely...If you're not feeling quite right about your current vet, find a new one---they are, after all, holding our life (i.e. our babies) in their hands. And again, sooo relieved to hear that little lawnmower, Chewie, is better; and that you made it through with flying colors, too!!!! |
Just an update, Chewie had a relapse today so we made a trip to a different vet. The staff was immediately more courteous and friendly than the vet's office I've been going to, and they all loved chewie. The nurse took his temp, listened to my concerns, did a swab for parvo, and also did a swab on his ears which I also wanted checked. The parvo was negative, and she did a thorough exam and then ran blood work for him. He was clear on all except had low red blood cell count so she suspected hook worms and gave me meds for that. Also they ran an xray, which shows a tiny pebble he ate. They gave him fluids and a shot for nausea, and sent me home with bland food, more nausea meds, and I am supposed to bring back a stool sample for them. It was expensive but glad I went, I feel like that's what should have been done at the first vet. And I've learned that even though he is a furbaby, the momma instincts are still there and I am glad I chose to go with my gut! |
You are 100% perfectly exactly right!!! Go with your instincts, trust yourself and remember, you know Chewie better than anyone. And don't hesitate to mention things to your vet like, "He just isn't acting like himself..." and such. A good vet "gets" it, will listen and will factor those seemingly vague comments into her diagnosis. |
Awesome sauce |
Such great news, so happy to hear Chewie is doing well! |
