Dark roots that never grow out I am mystified as to how Joni has dark roots along her spine but it turns white as it grows out. If she were cut very short I think she would be a darker gray (maybe not steel blue) on her body. But I keep her coat longer and it grows quickly- she can look abominable snowman practically overnite. Totally the opposite of me- gotta keep some color on those gray roots! Does anyone know how hair turns white as it grows out? |
My Teddy is the same way. Dark roots and blonde/silver/almost white long hair on his back. I don't remember the scientific explanation for it. I looked it up once because my 76 year old dad is the same way. Dark roots with silver tips. :p |
My Bubba is the same way. In the summer when he is cut short he looks almost black on his body. As the hair grows it is silver with black roots. I got so tired of my grey roots that I let it go to all grey. Every once in a while I think I should color it but then I remember what a pain it was keeping up with the roots. |
It has to be something with the Melanin, doesn't it...? |
My Abby has dark roots and grows out to mixed silver and gray. I always thought it was because of fading- she spends a lot of time outside in our FL sun and swimming in a chlorine pool. Maybe not... |
As I understand it, it has to do with the pup's genetic ability to produce black pigment protein (eumelanin) in conjunction with the internal shape of the hair itself so that the pigment, properly produced, can be reflected down the inside of the hair shaft to the tip of the hair. If incorrect, the pigment 'may' only travel a short way. From what I have found, there is a specific 'triangular internal shape' that allows the color to reflect properly down the hair shaft. Without it, the color won't go all the way to the tip of the hair. This is all from ('bad'...?..LOL) memory, but I have a document with the explanation, diagram of the hair 'shapes' included...somewhere......very interesting. The correct hair shape will have the correct 'sheen' and 'feel' too...if I remember correctly. |

Interesting...but I have no idea about this in humans. Maybe it's contagious...is he around Teddy a lot? :lol tears |
Found the document..."Color & Texture" by Joan Gordon...2010 / Dugmore Yorkies. Color & Texture by Joan Gordon |
That is fascinating information navillusc - thank you for furnishing. Much of it too complicated to fully grasp but I get the basics along with your summary. It also helps me understand how Joni's breeder knew by 4 mos that her color would prevent her from meeting standard and any oppty to show. Lucky me!!! Joni and I will rock our silver hair (my roots and her tips) for a long time together! |

Sounds like a matched pair...LOL I wish I fully understood every bit of it...my brain would probably explode if I did, but how cool would it be to understand all of it in detail. I think things like breeders being able to assess a dog's genetic attributes at early ages is an amazing thing!!! |
