how to know if you are buying from a good breeder I'm looking to get a yorkie not sure if I want a tea or regular size but how do I know of it a good breeder? I'm in MI I see them from 300 to 2500 help thanks |
Congratulations on your decision. Get ready for a big life style change. Yorkies are a handful. But so darn loving. 1st of all do not buy from a breeder who sells "teacups" no such thing in the real yorkie. Some are smaller than others, but stander weight for an AKC yorkie should be around 7lbs when grown. They are such a wild child you need some weight on them to keep them safe & healthy. Find a breeder who doesn't care if you ask a zillion questions. You should be able to see the mom & dad and check all the papers on their pedigree. It's not easy for this rip off world we live in. Check here on YT to see if any breeders are close to you. There's some wonderful advice given here from others. Good luck 😀 |

Also understand the size, both of mine are 5lbs, that is SMALL, I wouldn't want them any smaller. Picking the wrong or backyard breeder in order to get a cheap OR expensive "tiny" is opening Pandora's box of health issues. I am not a breeder, that is a job I do not want for the heartbreak that goes with it. I am a buyer that got burnt the first time from a byb that ended up costing big money in vet cost. I was uneducated and did not know any better, but it didn't take me but one time to learn. Know that Yorkies are proned to certain illnesses, decisions of where you get your pup could make or break your heart. When I got Presley I didn't even want to see him until I had done my homework on the breeder and a million questions to the breeder. This was a decision I made with my head first, and after that the first sight of him my heart was his. Good luck and please do not be scared to ask breeders questions. I know there is a million more reminders for you that I haven't posted, hopefully others will give you tips too :) |
Good advice above: health guarantee, ask to see the parents, research the breeder's name on the internet. Ideally the breeder shouldn't let pups go before 12 weeks, but definitely not under 8 weeks. A number of factors influence price: location, girls are usually more expensive than boys, champion sired and so on. I would be leery of a price too low, and one too high. Ideal size depends on you and your lifestyle. I chose larger because I'm tall and my 9+ pound boys seem small to me. :D Admittedly, they were easier to carry together at 6 - 7 pounds. Above all else, the best recommendation is patience. Listen to your instincts. Best wishes in your search. |
I would read some of the threads from this posting: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...ent-guide.html |

I realized along the way to looking for a puppy is to get a feel of the person and see how they respond to your questions, are they hesitant, moody, or are they willing to answer all your questions. Another thing I learnt along the way, is the Breeder okay with you taking it to a vet, is there any pressure into buying the puppy, stuff like that you have to look out for. I found a great breeder recently, he is not registered but was completely transparent about the whole process, he will even let me take it to the vet Before even purchasing the puppy, already met the parents, let me in his house to sit and interact with the puppies and parents, very kind older man. That is a sign of a good breeder IMO. |

I did online reference check on a breeder in the USA, a breeder from this very forum and I know I wouldn't buy a puppy from a breeder who acts like this. Buying a puppy should be a joyful event, not a stressful event. If they are so overbearing, chances are their dogs are sick and need special care. At least that's the way I would interpret this review. Specialty: Yorkshire Terrier Average Rating (2 Ratings) Need a lawyer for this one February, 2011 Made me feel like a criminal. Asked so many questions, thought I should bring a lawyer to represent me. Left without a purchase. I was very fortunate, that with a bit of persistence, I found a reputable breeder. But I had to figure out what association could give me a name of an honest breeder with healthy dogs and puppies. He has been wonderful to me. So kind, informative and helpful and most of all non judgmental. Best wishes to you, I hope you find a sweet yorkie baby that is healthy and you do not need to fear hypoglycemia and the many things people have to constantly be thinking of after buying a yorkie regarding health. Try not to buy a puppy on impulse but think it through and when you have a peace in your heart. It is a commitment to a dog and a healthy dog will make your enjoyment of your pet so much more enjoyable! It's a shame that the yorkshires have been over breed by people only interested in money and not the health of the animal and the happiness of their human families. |

I was interviewing a man years ago....this could very well be from HIM about ME!!! as I think he did give me a "bad review" on line because he was in no mood to answer ANY questions from me!! He figured HE had the right to wander all over my property, looking at every room in my home, looking at alll my dogs, all my babies, and I had NO right to ask him anything other than his name!.......This man was highly offended because I started talking to him about the family, if he had ever had a Yorkie, and then I handed him my application for purchasing a puppy......he was highly offended, very rude, and before he threw my interview papers at me and stormed out of my home, he informed me he "was buying a damn dog, not adopting a child, and he had NO intention of jumping thru hoops like this just to buy a damn dog!" I did tell him I understood how he felt and he did not have to be concerned about buying any of my babies because without even lifting a pen, he had answered all I needed to know about owning a Rosehill baby and he couldnt PRINT enough money to own one of my babies! So that may have very well been his review, as I heard from many of my breeder friends he had written something on line about me! I was actually very flattered if that was indeed his review of me and Rosehill Yorkies! I know my buyers as well as they know me....if that does not meet with their approval, they need to buy someone elses puppy! I have my heart and soul invested in this venture, and I protect my babies as much as if I personally had given birth to each of them! All thru the years, my owners have been absolutely wonderful, trustworthy, dependable, kind, HONEST, and loving....I treasure each one of them! |
