Pee pad training help Hi, I have a 10 week old baby and she is doing very very good on going pee on her potty pads but she will not poop on her potty pads. What can I do? When I catch her in the act I startle her so she can stop and take her to the potty pad. She's very tiny so she gets under the bed with ease and I've discovered that under the bed is her favorite spot to poop. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance *im sorry if I'm posting in the wrong thread |
How much freedom are you letter her have? such as the house - is she free to run all over the house or do you have her confined to certain room? Also after she eats, you prob know how long before she poops, so would try to confine her to the pad area during that time. I am also doing potty training, and I have put an ex-pen around two pee pads and put her in and close the ex-pen till she goes, then click and treat. Once she goes then open up the ex-pen so she can Run FREE. (in her confined area) There are a couple of good books on this subject - How to potty train your dog in 7 days (with schedules), and Your Yorkshire Terrier Puppy Month By Month. These are both excellent books. She is still young at only 10 weeks. How long have you had her? |
I have her in a ex pen inside my room. I let her roam around my room during the day and she does fine going pee on her pads while out of her pen. I'm just having trouble with her going poo on them. I also free feed her at the moment so she eats at different times. I've tried timing in between the times she eats but it's always different times she goes and sometimes she sneaks under and goes before I can catch her.. I will look into getting training books. I've had her for a week. |
I trained Annie with treats (you have to 'throw a party' with praise and excitement). She gets 1/2 of a Blue Buffalo mini dental bone (her favorite) when she poops on the pad. It only took me about 2 weeks to get the message across that if she wanted the 'party' and bone then she had to poop on the pad. I then just pick it up with a piece of toilet paper and flush it. Works great! She actually comes and gets me with the "I did something good" stare so I can go check to see she went. You have to be diligent in not missing it...... |

The key is to pay really close attention and give the treat ASAP for the good job. Kind of like when your kids look at you and you know what they did...good or bad.... You have the same ability with your dog. You just have to cultivate it! I must have made 50 trips to the pee pads checking on her initially. Now I just know the look. She knows I have to go inspect first before she gets her treat. Use the same word for what ever your dog did. Annie knows 'potty' is for pee and 'poopy' is for the poop. Be consistent in you wording as dogs like repetition. |
What I did with Beowulf was tell him "no potty here, bad boy! Pick up his poop and put it on the potty pad and told him "you go potty here, good boy" and I would leave the poo there and I would leave him in his play pen for a while. Every time he went potty on his pad I would get all excited and give him a treat. Some people recommend keeping the puppy in one area until the puppy is fully trained. If not watch the puppy like a hawk! Which is what l did as soon as I saw him getting in that position I picked him up and brought him to his play pen and said "go potty". The times I didnt catch him I would pick up the poop and put it on his pee pad. I have heard of some people keeping there dog on a leash in the house to keep him close that way you can watch him better. I hope this helps! Happy training. |
