New Yorkie Mom! Need help with spay question I am a new Yorkie Mom to a now 7 month old 4 pound toy yorkie Minnie! I am having her spayed and 4 teeth pulled on the 5th and they are not keeping her overnight. I am nervous as she is so tiny. Is it typical that they don't keep her overnight? |
Yes it is typical...... Years back when I had a BIG girl spayed at 6 months I was soooo nervous I insisted they keep her over night. Some vets do not have night personal to monitor dogs, If your vet does and if you have the funds to pay for over night, and you are really nervous you can insist they PLEASE keep her over night. |
I won't allow mine to stay overnight at my vet because there is no one there at night. I have brought home every spay and neuter over the years...mine and my fosters and have never had any issues. Just be prepared for her to maybe be a bit whiney and restless. They get that way from the anesthesia and pain meds. Also make sure you have pain meds on hand. |
I agree, I don't let mine stay over night for something like a spay/neuter either. For 1 thing it's not safe for them to stay in an unattended office as anything can happen & IF for some reason she should have a small bleeder in the night , there is no one there to take care of it & she's better off at home where she can be monitored by you. A spay is not usually anything to worry about & they often just want to sleep it off anyway & will be much more comfy doing that in the comfort of home rather then in a stressful environment . Don't worry, she will be fine. |
My pebbles was 2 pounds and she was kept overnight. She did have a bad resp tract infection from tube they used and had to have 3 weeks of antibiotics. Still think they may have damaged her trachea. Also pulled out about 8 baby teeth but couldn't get them all because vet said she " got in trouble" and had to be taken from under anesthesia quickly. Most don't have complications but mine did. My boy bam bam on the other had was about 4 pounds and he had no trouble at all with his neuter but neutering is a lot less invasive of course. Wish u the best |
Piper was older (3 yrs) and larger (9 lbs), but I, too, brought her home the same day. Within the first hour home I called my vet and explained Piper could not seem to get comfortable and she kept stretching her little neck. My vet said to increase her pain med--very carefully (i.e. amount) and after doing so, my girl slept--rest, after all, is truly thee best medicine. I made sure Piper had water and offered her bites of chicken, but the first 12-24 hrs, she pretty much took small doses of pain medicine and slept. Keep a close eye on your girl, make sure she's warm and comfortable and keep her close. Don't let her do anything like jumping, etc., for several days...Of course as they get to feeling better, they think they're invincible! Which is why, of course, you have to control their activities. Your little one will do well, but I totally get how unnerving the whole procedure and recovery is on you! Deep breath...you'll both be fine! |
I always prefer to bring mine home as I feel it's the safest place for them to be. Just make SURE you go home with pain meds and a PAIN PLAN -- ie, what is the dose you give normally; and then, what should you give if the pain is NOT being controlled properly - what then? Know the answer. :) |
