Treatment for Giardia My Morkie jake tested positive for giardia they treated him with panacur and Metronidazole then waited 30 days for retest well he tested positive again this time the vet wanted to use ronidazole. I heard bad things about this one. He acts like a normal full of energy puppy his stool are loose on occasion and thinks his poop is steak so I constantly have to watch what he is snacking on (yuck). |
Hi and welcome to YT :). What bad things did you hear about the med...? As far as poop eating, I'd buy Solid Gold's SEP (Stop Eating Poop) on Amazon. Worked like a charm when our Wylie was a puppy and poop eating. Also, you may want to change kibbles...what are you feeding? If you're feeding a higher-carb kibble, this can really contribute to poop eating as many carbs are still undigested in the poo, making the poo still smell like food to the dog. |
Jake is on Wellness puppy dry and he also does not mind sampling other dogs poop so not sure if changing the food would matter. The med ronidazole seems to have more troublesome side effects and is a carcinogen it does not seem to be a standard treatment. I know that researching on the web can give good and bad info. My vet did tell me that the drug has not been tested long term and she warned me of all the possible side effects probably has skull and crossbones on the bottle (sorry I made that up) I was wondering if I should get a second opinion from another vet? Any chance it will clear up as he gets older (I wish) |
Google food grade Diatomaceous Earth. I sprinkle it on their food. My toy breeds 1/2 tsp but if your yorkie is less than 4 pounds I'd only sprinkle 1/4 tsp. Hope that helps. |
The problem with parasites is that they have a cycle and though some "treatments" can kill the adult parasites and their larva, some medications do not kill the eggs and the cycle starts all over again. Parasites hide very easily in the body so if an animal or human is infested with parasites, it can take a long time to get rid of them, months. I know this from experience and it isn't fun. The Diatomaceous Earth has been very helpful. If your pet needs this treatment, all the pets and the entire family needs to be treated at the same time to help break the cycle. I know this is not common in the US but it's very common around the world. We put 1 tbls for adults and 1/2 tsp for children of DE in our juice. It's non toxic to humans and animals and works better than any drug. Just make sure it's food grade. |
