Walking between 8-12 weeks
 

One video tutorial mentioned that puppies under 6 months could walk 15-20 min. How long do you walk your 8-12 week old puppies?

8 to 12 weeks old here in the states have not had all their vaccines and should NOT be walked out doors until ALL vaccines are given which is 5 to 6 months old.

ahh, Did not know that...what about in your own driveway and yard?

What about play time in general then? I'd much rather schedule play times during waking hours! How long can 8 week olds stay awake between feedings etc?

I'm hoping to play with Pax an hour before bed, can he hold out an hour or could he handle more? One video tutorial said 1-2 hours of play before bed but I have no idea how long an 8 week old can play. I do not want to allow Pax to sleep during the day when he could be playing to find he's awake all night playing! I'm such a planner and need to adjust my schedule to accommodate the puppy.

Other than a sneaky squirrel, snake, lizard or rat that dare to trespass, the only animals that may be "traipsing around/on your property," would be mine. The most danger on my property would be IF he were unsupervised and picked up by a hawk :eek: My 3 year old yorkie(RIP) some how managed to survive living a healthy life within the walls of our home and where ever I happen to have taken him since the age of 12 weeks. Puppies need vitamin D just like humans, I can assure you, my new puppy will not be confined to the house (just in case you wanted to know)

That reminds me of some women in latin countries that wrap their children in heavy blankets, appearing to suffocate them, and do not leave their house for the first month nor will they bathe their babies without a receiving blanket.

NOOOOOO, not your driveway, not your yard, NOT OUT DOORS AT ALL. Not until all vaccines have been given and like jkpal stated one week AFTER final vaccine, then it is safe to take puppy where ever. Don't worry about knocking out a 8 week old baby, you will be knocked out before that baby is lol, let him sleep when ever he wants to, remember, this baby is but a wee baby new to our beautiful wondrous world, he will play til he drops lol, as far as feeding, it is advised to free feed, leave a bowl of food down at all times, let the baby eat when ever he is hungry, fill bowl when it is empty. When you first get your baby from my experience of 8 puppies he will cry / whine for 2 or 3 nights. At bed time put his crate next to your bed, put an item of your clothing a T-shirt, blouse what ever has your scent on it, when he crys during the night reach down into his crate, let him smell you are there near him. The first 2 or 3 nights are the hardest, he is missing his momma and litter mates. These U-Tube videos you are viewing, do they tell you every dog is different, these are just basic guide lines, no 2 dogs are alike. I wouldn't want you to feel like a failure or think you have a weird puppy if he does not follow these U-Tube videos.

Your puppy will let you know when he/she is ready for rest. Some of them just plop down right in the middle of play. I agree with other comments in regards to outdoor activities until after full set of shots. I'd even wait until 2-3 weeks after. I would also advise that you not take your pup anywhere or let other people handle it until all shots are given. You'll have plenty of time to do all of that but for now prevention is key. Better safe than sorry. Sounds over protective but we can never do too much to protect our little ones. I have approached many people in pet stores with pups that I know are too young to have had all of their shots and I'm surprised to find out how many people really just don't know the risk they are taking. Oh and remember wild animals carry diseases too! Good luck with your new baby and enjoy!

Are you kidding me? The first night home Pax and I are watching this U-tube video and starting first thing in the morning! Imagine how much crying may have taken place over night in K-9 school. I'll be sure to have Pax wait before darting out of his crate. Pax will be well behaved.

My babies go out to new owners at 16 weeks old, fully vaccinated except rabies. These babies are so small, there is absolutely NO reason to put them outside until they are fully and completely vaccinated. Your house is plenty large enough, even if it is just 2 rooms large, that a little puppy can get enough exercise without risking the danger of taking it outside! That baby does not know "outside"....they do not miss what they do not know! That "must go outside" is in YOUR head, heart and soul, not that baby's.

Max was about 15 weeks old when we started walking 1 mile in the morning. This was after his shots. Rabies should be done later at 5 - 6 months, but it is important to have the others done before going outdoors. You don't want your pup to contract Parvo or one of the other preventable diseases.

Under 12 weeks -- depending on the size of your pup, you don't want to over-exercise or over-handle. Puppies need rest. Under 3 pounds particularly, you run a big risk of hypoglycemia if the puppy is overhandled.

Remind me, at what age do they typically receive parvo shots?

A mile seems like such a long walk for such tiny legs at 15 weeks. Maximo, can you remember how walks helped with his behavior and rest through the night with daily walks? I'm slow, it takes me 15-20 min to walk a mile and depends if there are hills. Obviously, I would carry him in his sling if it were too much.

I seem to remember we played ball down the hallway with Houdini, until the barking was too unbearably loud in the house, then we moved outside on our property. It doesn't seem that they bark right away.

Wow your puppies do sound small. Houdini was 6 pounds after neutering.

My babies are between 4.5 - 7 lbs when they are a year old. But when they are 4 months old, they are small enough to get enough exercise inside the house!

Getting enough exercise in the house is a good thing during the winter!

It would be nice if forum posts came with voice inflection and tones so we could hear the good nature behind our posts. I'm married to a man that is very sarcastic, but not in a mean way. Now after nearly 30 years of marriage, I think I come up with sarcastic things to say faster than he does. :D

I have lived in a foreign country for nearly 12 years and just this week, texting with the owner of the dog that killed my dog, I thought she wrote some very offensive things to me only to find out that they were actually kind hearted expressions. What read to me as. "an ugly face to me," was actually, "we give you everything," lololol a BIG difference!
