In need of advice and expertise! Since we are first time pet owners, we know nothing. We are looking at a female miniature schnauzer puppy. Can anyone advise how Zeus would get along with a girl? He is neutered and she would be spayed. Two different breeds? How do you potty train the second? Zeus was so easy to train. We gated him the laundry room, and he was trained in less than a month. He now has free reign of the house. How do you shut one off to train and the other runs free? It seems cruel. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks! |
:) Not really much advice...but I love Miniature Schnauzers...we used to have a little boy one called Sam and he was adorable. Our Harry :aimeeyork (like your Zeus) was an absolute breeze to train - Sam was a different story!!! :D It might have been just him, but Sam was a little bit thick... It took him aaages to get the grasp of potty-training...he used to go to sleep at the top of our stairs then roll over in his sleep and tumble down them...he used to lay by the fire until we could smell singeing...but he was just so gorgeous and lovable :) Personally I would keep them separate until the newbie is trained - Zeus has earned his freedom. Maybe a baby-gate so that they can see one another? It's not just the pottying - it'd be the chewing that I'd worry about more. It truly isn't cruel - it's protection for your new little girl-to-be!! :) Oh, and I'm sure Zeus would LOVE a new little girl in his pack... Good luck with your decision - can't wait to see photos!! |
I think Zeus would do great with a little sister! Two different breeds is totally fine. For potty training I would go about it the same way you did with Zeus. I also don't think it's cruel to separate one from the other when it's time to train. Teddy was such an easy perfect puppy, he's set the bar really high in our house lol. We just adopted a 2nd puppy on Saturday, completely different breed also. I'm training Bandit the same exact way I trained Teddy and everything has been working out great. To do obedience training with Bandit I have to put Teddy in his crate or keep him in my bedroom because if I do then Teddy becomes a show off and will get right in front of Bandit and do whatever trick I'm asking. As far as potty training goes, Bandit is being crate trained so when he has to go potty he'll whine. Sometimes I'll take both boys out at the same time, sometimes I won't because every so often Bandit will run after Teddy and almost get peed on lol. |
Even if Zeus isn't thrilled at first, he will probably adjust pretty quickly and they'll become buddies. As far as potty training, totally up to you...you could always keep them together when you have to lock the puppy away. |
I will chime in as well on the side that it is not cruel to confine the puppy when the other dog is out n about. Dogs do learn by watching as well as doing - just like we humans! You can use your laundry room for both dogs when you go out and about or when you want to clean house etc. And as another poster mentioned it is good to walk the pup separately especially in the beginning so that you build her confidence without the older dog around. Then sometimes together so they bond as a pack and also to learn to walk together nicely. dogs love to work and do obedience. My three all do. When I work with one outside the other two are by the window whining to go out. Great fun. |
