Unconscious after falling off the bed
 

Yesterday, Chloe accidentally rolled herself over to the edge of the bed and fell off. When she fell off, she went unconscious. Her eyes were open and her tongue was out a little bit and her body was very stiff. I think this was the most terrifying moment of my life:( after a few minutes she was conscious again but I still rushed her to the ER. They said everything is ok and she's running around and eating now but I keep getting that visual of her little eyes motionless and it's bothering me so much :(

Does anyone know what could have caused that paralysis? Was it shock from the fall? I feel really terrible:(

Oh my gosh! That's horrible! What did the vet say caused it? That's who can give you the answer.

Did your vet give her anything to make sure there was no swelling in her brain? I had a baby running around the back yard, and when she ran from the bright sunlight, into the shadow of the house, her eyes had not adjusted yet and she took a sharp left andf ran full speed into the A/C unit.....knocked herself out cold....I rushed her to the vet, by the time we got there she was awake, but the vet went ahead and gave her injections to be sure any concussion she may have sustained (which if she was knocked unconscious, she did have a brain injury)did not cause any problems with swelling and further injury to her brain.

You are fortunate.....I had one fall off my bed years ago, and it killed her.....this is how we learn from our mistakes!.....you are fortunate she did not injure herself seriously or even die.

My Roxie was sleeping on the bed and woke up with a start and was disoriented and fell off the bed. It scared the crap out of me.
I picked her up right away but she was not using her front paw.
I took her to the Vet and he said she broke the paw and probably needed to have a metal rod put in it.

Roxie is only 2.8 pounds so after conferring with another Vet they decided it would be too much of a risk of death to operate.
They just wrapped it as they didn't have casts small enough for her.Every few days I had to take her back to have the wrap changed to make sure it wasn't cutting off her circulation.
After about 8 weeks Roxie was running around again like nothing had ever happened.

Needless to say she is not allowed on the bed EVER again.

Sounds like it might have set off a mini mal seizure.

Oh dear! I am so sorry to hear this :( you must be distraught about your poor little Chloe :unlove: I am really glad she seems to be okay and I am concerned about potential swelling too! I would definitely be giving a call back to check on that. Hope everything continues on smoothly for your special little girl.

She was probably just temporarily stunned, but my guess is that the vet checked her thoroughly and that she is really okay. How is she today?

What a scare! I am glad the vet found no issues. I hope all is still okay with her. Yikes!

Hi everyone, thank you for all your kind words. I'm very grateful that Chloe has been okay. She has been eating and playing and behaving like her normal self. I have been extra careful with her though because that was extremely scary.

I would continue to watch her very closely for any neurological symptoms. I had a pup (Maxwell) many years ago who walked right off the side of a bed. He seemed to be perfectly fine after this happened. About two weeks later he started having a slight problem with his front foot...it would slip a bit on slippery floors. At first i thought it was maybe some hair in the pads of his foot, but no...there was none. It was odd. Anyway....this was just the first sign of what was to come. Maxwell ended up unable to stand one day. My vet had seen him and didn't find anything remarkable prior to this. So, this one day when he could not stand up, I rushed him there and she referred me to an ortho surgeon in the area. This surgeon told me it was his shoulders and knees and could not be fixed. I was a bit taken aback and asked him how this could happen all at once. Anyway....he kept insisting and told me I should get a cart for him. I called my vet and asked her to xray him to see if his knees or shoulders looked that bad...of course they did not. She referred me to Texas A&M and he was immediately admitted and worked up for MRI and most likely surgery on his cervical spine. He had two herniated discs! If it had progressed any further he would have been paralyzed for life...thankfully he still had deep pain reflex and was still aware of the need to use his bladder and bowels.
Sorry...this is long. My point is that sometimes things show up much later. She is probably going to be just fine...I don't want to scare you....but, just want to emphasize that you should watch closely for while.
