Heartworm 6 months or a year? In British Columbia, I always gave heart worm to my Yorkie for 6 months, that is all the vet said to do, until last year, when I mentioned I went to Arizona for 6 months during the winter, he then said my pup would have to be on it for all 12 months instead of 6. True? |
We give heartworm preventatives year round here in Virginia because of the life cycle of the heartworm. There would only be 3 months out of the year that we could maybe risk not giving it, then we would have to do the test before re-starting. |

Yeah, we do year round since I see mosquitoes in as late as December and as early as March around here. That means a few may around year round. I had a dog die from heart worms 30 years ago when the treatment was very hard on them. It is just too traumatic for me to risk again. |
YES - most definitely give HW meds here in AZ. Though our incidence/prevalence isn't as severe as elsewhere, HW is definitely occurring here in AZ. I do year round, for sure. |
We are in Maine and have brutal Winters but I still give Heartguard year round . I have seen mosquitoes in November so better safe than sorry .. |
Thanks so much everyone, I will definitely get them both on heartworm all year round. My vet's office knew I went to AZ for 6 months every year, but only told me one year ago, that I should be giving them heart worm 12 months instead of 6. I am upset I didn't know about the year round meds with Tiffany and Chanel. RIP to both my precious angels. |
If you were there in the winter then there was a lower chance of them getting Heartworms. I would keep the new babies on HW meds year round though now that you know about it. Heartworm is not expensive. I have mine on it year round. |
Regardless of the weather my girls get HG and Nexguard 12 months out of 12. I would rather be safe than sorry.:) |
Heartworm meds 12 months but still yearly blood test? I'm in Ohio, and my vet told me even if I keep my babies on heartworm meds on a 12-month basis, I still need the yearly blood test. Anyone with info on this? |
Definitely 12 months here in Mississippi. We kill mosquitoes all year long. |
In New Hampshire we give heart worm pills every month, Roxie had a hard time with the large ones so the Vet put her on Sentinel which are small and easier for her to take |
