Update on Chloe re: Racoon We went to the vet the next morning, the vet checked Chloe over very well and did not find any injuries, the vet said Chloe did not need a booster shot, because Chloe only had her shots 6 months ago, but just keep a close eye on her and look for any swelling or bumps, but very unlikely because she could not find any injuries. Chloe is her happy, bouncy self. I am so greatful that my precious Chloe is ok, we are so lucky, God was definately looking out for her. She is pee pad trained and I have not taken her out in the backyard since. I have not seen the racoon again, is there something you can put in the yard that racoons hate, and will stay away from ???? Chloe and I want to Thank You all very much for your well wishes, concern and advice, it is so nice to have YorkieTalk, you all know how precious these little ones are, and we appreciate the friendship. Sincerely Liz, Chloe & Abby |
Good to hear that Chloe is ok. A situation like that would about give me a heart attack myself. Not sure what advice to keep racoons away except for traps or maybe even having a fence. |
So glad everything turned out so gooood for you and Chloe. It sounds like a real nightmare experience. We had a neighbor whose poodle was attacked by a raccoon and had to be put to sleep because she was hurt so bad. Bless your heart little Chloe had you right there to rescue her. God was good! :) I'm glad our babies are trained to use potty pads because we have lots of raccoons in our area. They sometimes have their young following along through our yard. Climbing the trees peeking in our screen porch. |
So glad that your little girl is ok. Maybe a big ole Pitbull in your yard would keep that raccoon away. If not, I would get a trap because they are dangerous even though they look cute. |
Thanks for the update! I was wondering how she was doing. It's so good you took her to be checked out. I think an internet search would be necessary to find out about a deterrent for raccoons......garlic for vampires, maybe the same for them, LOL:confused: |
You could put a rottweiler in the yard, I think the raccoons would hate that. |

Glad to hear a positive update :). |
I am so glad Chloe is ok and happy she is feeling better today .. |
Great you took Chloe to the vet for a closer look at her. You can contact a wild life exterminator to see what if anything can be used to keep skunks, racoons out of your yard that would also be safe for dogs, fences they can still dig under one to get in your yard. Last year 6AM I had a opossum almost on my back deck when I let Cody out. There WAS appox. a 4 inch space between where the deck steps railing are and the house, this critter was a youngster had it's head through that space, had I let Cody out one or two minutes later it would have been on the deck, Cody would have been on it in a flash, he would have been killed from this animal. 8AM I was on the phone with my handy man, 10AM that space was filled in, but I still go out first to check the deck, racoons, opossums are climbers. I still can't figure out why that opossum wanted to get on my deck, there's no food there and I haven't used my grill for a couple of years for it to have smelled food back there. When living in the country one must always stay vigilant with these fur butts. Happy that your Chloe is ok. |
If you google raccoon deterrent and go to images you will see all kind of stuff . I always read the reviews to see if anyone has had any luck with the products. I know that bird feeders will bring them into the yard. Good to hear all is well. |
Opossums vs Raccoon's Opossums are typically not an aggressive animal. It would have played dead if Cody attacked it so you could have grabbed him. Opossums rarely attack and they really do play dead as a first defense and hope the other animal thinks they are not worth their time. Raccoon's are much more dangerous to a dog because they will immediately fight back. My mom gets opossums in her house sometimes as they come in through the doggie door and they just play dead behind the couch while the s**tz Tzu and Boxer bark at it and then my step dad has to removed it from the house. Opossums have such a bad rap when they really aren't nearly as bad as what people think. Raccoon's are much more likely to give your dog rabies and to also attack your dog. Opossums are ugly, but they are not very aggressive and mostly just curious animals. If you see an aggressive opossum then I would be concerned about it having parvo or rabies. Parvo presents with a lot of the same symptoms as rabies does in wild animals. From a scientific point of view, it is extremely rare for an opossum to carry rabies where a raccoon has a much higher risk of having the disease. Opossum's body temperature is much lower than a lot of the other wildlife and the rabies virus can't survive at that temp, also, they rarely fight with other carriers of the disease to pick it up as well. Squirrels are the same way, there are no documented cases in the US of a squirrel giving rabies to a person or pet. Just wanted to throw that out there so if your dog does have an encounter with a opossum and it barks at a "playing dead" one I would not be overly concerned about rabies, just make sure your dog is up to date on it's vaccination. |

That is one scary pix! Thanks for the info Jade. |
So glad your little baby is okay :) they do make deterrents but raccoons are tough ones to deter because they are garbage eaters. Rabbits and deer shy away from blood Meal and putrescence egg solids (typical ingredients in a deterrent) but raccoons are often digging through garbages that smell like that! Eww. Some deterrent sprays will smell like cloves and peppermint and those might work on a rat or raccoon, other potential sprays/granules that might work would be predatory urine- like coyote or bobcat. They actually sell that. Live traps are an option and fish and wildlife may even come out to destroy them for you depending on how extreme they are in your area. Calling your local fish and wildlife should help you get an idea of how they may or may not support and what your local regulations are. |
