strange behavior after poo accident
 

Maggie had an accident the other day and pooped in front of the door to the garage. I came in the door and the door scraped over it, spreading it, oh joy! I didn't say anything to Maggie, I just cleaned it up. It was on a carpet doormat so I shook off most of it and then washed it with Dawn dishsoap and dried it and put it back. Now, she doesn't want to exit the house through that door. She doesn't want to come in that way and from the garage side doesn't want to climb the steps up to the door.

The accident was caused by an upset stomach. Her poo was part normal, part mucousy and part wet. the only times she ever has accidents inside is if her poop isn't normal. She did do it about a month ago when I was gone too long (new grandbaby was born that week!) It was near the door again and I think hubby may have flipped out a little, though not directly at her. She has been leery of walking across our foyer area carpet since then, which is where some poo got tracked. She walks around it on the wood part instead.

Its very odd, since we didn't yell at her. Hubby said the day he came home he knew she had done something by how she acted, so we think she knows it is bad to do.

I am going to take her stool to the vet today. It was half normal and half with mucous on it. 2hours later she pooped a little mucous goo...She is eating fine and behaving fine. Sometimes I think it is stress, but I can't think of anything that stressed her recently. We are giving her chicken and rice...but hubby still sneaks her a little treat now and then. Its not diarrhea in the sense that its not constant, just her normal daily poop, except for the little bonus mucous today. I don't think she even went at all yesterday..

She is 11 pound yorkipoo, age 5.5

Mario will not walk by an area he has accident--cleaned or not. I learned to take him for a walk in the house on his leash, past the problem area while praising him for doing well on the leash or doing a trick near that area. Then he knows mommy is not mad, and all is well in his world. Then he no longer avoids the spot.

This has worked in my favor when at my in-laws though. Their dog made a mess in the house, and Mario was being blamed, but I knew it was not him since he would go past the area :)

She might associate the spot with being sick, and that might be why she is avoiding it. When Teddy was sick and had diarrhea, Max was reluctant to use the piddle pad in that spot although everything had been thoroughly cleaned. I had to put a pad down in another area for a few days.

Since having Maggie I really believe now that dogs "think" more than a lot of people think they do. I'm sure a cat wouldn't give a sh*t!

Her fecal was normal and she is still acting herself, so more chicken and rice and we'll see how it goes.
