Skin When I got Beowulf from his breeder (8/17/15) I noticed (when I got home of course) he had a bunch of scabs around his head neck and body. After a couple of weeks they were flaking off and he looked like he had bad dandruff. Now its been a couple of months since I had him. Ive been feeding him Nulo and using Hylyft shampoo on him and once I put coconut oil on him and left it for a couple of hours then I bathed him. He is doing A lot better! but I feel like he gets new ones in different spots. So I'm trying to figure out what it is. I was bathing him like every 3 days and now I'm going to try not bathing him for 2 wks to see if it will totally fix the problem. Has anyone ever experienced this with their puppy? |
It sounds a bit severe ask a vet...dry skin is just minor itching and cured with coconut oil and the itch can be helped by oatmeal shampoo but if the pup has sores and dandruff ask a vet |
Hi, congratulations on your puppy baby. I have not had the experience you describe, however, there is likely a reason for it to occur. If your vet has not provided an answer or solution, you may need a second assessment. I am aware of a 'walking dandruff' condition caused by a treatable source...not saying that's what it is because I have never had a dog with that myself either. Does your baby seem itchy or do the spots bother him? That may help identify the cause. Allergies, etc. would be things to discover and avoiding what he is allergic to would help your baby be comfortable, too. Food ingredients could be investigated and an elimination diet to identify allergens is an option as well. Coconut oil can be put on his skin any time or in his shampoo solution, too. He can eat it as well. I hope you find the solution quickly. |
It doesn't seem to bother him and he scratches as much as any other dog. He doesn't severely scratch, and the flaking is gone. He's gotten a lot better but he still gets random scabs. I'm going to get him groomed soon, I'll ask the groomer if they have ever seen a dogs skin like this, then Ill take him to the vet. It's just so expensive.:( |

dog same problem with my friend's yorkie, Dee Dee. Dry flaky skin. I put the coconut oil on her and for hot spots I soak a green tea bag in warm water and put that on the spots. It really helped heal the spots. So frustrating. She is on the zd hills diet and on nexgard for fleas. Poor dog. Sure hope we find out the source of this itching. Hope you do too. I had a poodle with bad skin and a venison dog food diet helped her. |
If he's getting scabs, you do truly need to go to the vet as this could be an infection and need meds. The vet will likely want to do a quick/cheap skin scraping to look at under scope. I'd do it ASAP. |
