Heartworm meds Does anyone have any suggestions on what heartworm meds to use for my Yorkies? |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. We use Heartgard Plus and have thought of Sentinel as an alternative. |
With only one dog, I would use Sentinel....I did for many years, with up to 5-7 dogs, then it became cost prohibitive for me. |
There is an injectable now that lasts 6 months. Sorry, i don't know the name of it. I have used Sentinel in the past. |
I use monthly Sentinel with mine. |
We use Revolution. |
I use either Heartguard+ or Interceptor. |
I use Sentinel Spectrum for my boys :) |
We use Sentinel for Zeus. He is too small (right under 4 lbs.) for the heartworm/flea combo pill, so the vet suggested Sentinel. It's $35 for 6 months from my vet. |
Waffles had a reaction to Sentinel. She is on Trifexis and no problems. |
We also use Sentinel because our Yorkie is only three pounds and they have a dosage of 2-10 pounds. If you don't like that, our friend uses the topical solution, Revolution, on her Yorkie, and she seems to like it. Quote:

Heartworm plus?? I use Sentinel Spectrum as that kills most worms and flea larvae too. If you break it up and mix with food we had no GI or other issues. You have to check which worms are killed by each of the worm meds. The Sentinel Spectrum seemed to cover the most parasites, but it is expensive. I use Frontline Plus topical for fleas and ticks. Both meds once a month, ugh! It might be worth checking with your vet which are best for your particular dogs. |
I use revolution, too. It pretty much covers everything from fleas to heartworm :) I prefer giving one application instead of two a month. |
I use Sentinel Spectrum on my babies. I give it to them because it is a chewable and not another topical. I decided one topical a month was enough. They seem to enjoy chewing it and none of them have had any reactions to it. I order it through DrsFosterandSmith.com. They contact my vet to get a prescription for it and then send it to me. It was less expensive through them; $7.99 a month. |
We give Heartguard to Ruger which is 5.5 lbs. With our late Yorkie Titan RIP he had bad reactions to intercepter. So switched him to Heartguard & no reactions |
