Michi eats everything in sight!!!
 
My lil Michi walks around the house with his nose to the ground sniffing all day long. He will eat any lil thing he finds. I vacuum and sweep daily but he still manages to find something. Am I under feeding him?? I feed him 1/2 cup a day divided in 3 meals. But he always seems hungry.


P.s. what are some good healthy treats/snacks for him?

How old is he? What does he weight?

He is 17 weeks today and weighs about 4-4.5 lbs

At that age they are just like human babies in that everything goes in their mouth.

I have always free fed my puppies when they were little. Usually the puppy food will have a chart that gives an idea of the correct amount to feed. I personally would give him more if I thought he was hungry.

The bag says 1/2 cup a day and that is also what his vet told me. I have tried to giving him more a couple times cuz I felt bad that he still seemed hungry and both times he threw up his undigested food

Well, I think I would go with what the vet recommended then. It's probably just an age thing. Peanut is 16 months old and doesn't pick up every little thing any more but Bizzie is 6 months old and I'm constantly checking to see what she is chewing on.

Cookie was like that too. Thank God she grew out of it. Until she was 6-8 months old I had to watch her like a hawk.

As for snacks, my Cookie Monster goes nuts over bell pepper, poblanos, and green beans. My previous yorkie Minnie loved chomping on carrots (they're so loud!) and loved green beans too. They both love banana too, though Minnie had my taste in bananas: if they hadn't just turned yellow she'd spit them out!

I'm glad to hear it's pretty normal. But man is it exhausting. I have to watch every move he makes and I'm constantly pulling things out of his mouth. (usually peices of carpet that he pulls up or the wicker hamper....I try to keep it blocked but he finds a way to get to it). It is definitely like having a new baby....and just as joy full.

Yeah, it is. But it's so rewarding raising Cookie from a little 13.5 week old girl when I got her! But yeah, yorkies are a handful at that age between the potty training, the constant trying to pick up and chew everything, the naughty games they play, etc. Speaking of the games, before Cookie was old enough to jump up and down from the couch she'd ask me to grab her and bring her up, then she'd take her toy lion and sit right on the edge of the couch and drop it. Then she'd cry for me to get her toy, I'd give it to her, and she'd take it right back to the edge and drop it again. She'd do this 10 or 20 times in a row. Then there was making her eat early on. With puppies you have to baby proof your home, be very very careful in the kitchen when preparing food, make sure you drop nothing on the floor as they will snap it up in a blink of the eye. Same thing outdoors, watch where you walk him as what ever is on the ground they will eat it. Puppies are like 2 y/o babies, everything goes in their mouths. Even as adults they will sniff around and pick things up. Cody is 4 y/o and adopted, acorns are now dropping from the trees, country living is new to him, he wants to eat the acorns, I am constantly removing them from his mouth. They need to be watched, they are just like babies.

Wow, I am glad to read this post, I am having the same problem with Zoey......she puts everything in her mouth. I am constantly pulling something out of her mouth, any little thing she can find anywhere around the house. She doesn't chew any of my things ie.....shoes, socks, furniture, baseboards.....but any little thing she finds on the floor is fair game !!!! I vacuum constantly, watch her like a hawk and still she always manages to find something to put in her mouth. When will she grow out of this habit ? She will be one year old on Oct 9. I free feed her because she is so small (2-1/2 pounds) so I know it's not hunger, plus she gets her treats everyday. She also has a box full of toys she loves and plays with constantly, so what's with the " I have to put everything in my mouth " nightmare. LOL PS......She is a disaster outside !!!!

My now passed girl Matese up until age 15 y/o when she started to lose her vision was always finding things, as careful as I was because I knew how she was, she would find paper clips play with them by putting them in her mouth, tossing them in the air, run after it and do it again. One tine she had a staple and was playing with it, this was in my home office where I was so very extra careful with staples when removing from paper, and paper clips. Matese was a very playful mischievous little girl. When will it stop lol, maybe never just like my girl Matese. My other pups stopped looking for things to eat at appox. 1.5 y/o I would say it depends on the dog. As for outdoor walking be very careful, age doesn't matter, if it's food in the street they will eat it no matter how old they are. This in my own personal experience.

Sasha is like Michi. She picks up everything she finds on the floor. And she LOVES to chew on the rugs/carpets! When we go outside she is constantly picking up bugs. Max is the opposite. He will sniff at something but rarely picks it up unless it is edible. Sasha has been like this since the day we picked her up so I am resigned to the fact that it won't change. We just have to keep a 3rd eye open with her.

I know what you mean. My floors have to be kept so clean or my boy vacs any bits up! If I drop something I have to be fast to get there before he does. He also is always hungry, but still goes for floor bits!
I think you are feeding enough and that this is just a Yorkie habit.
I too tried feeding more at one meal, but he threw up as he was overful. They don't seem to know when they have eaten enough.

Cali will be 2 next month and she is still like that. It's actually a really big problem for us because she is so intent on ingesting everything she can that she often gets sick. When she was 5 months old my husband dropped a pill and as he was trying to pick it up she swooped in and ate it. That was quite the hefty vet bill. :rolleyes: I would LOVE to be able to change that trait about her. Even though we are hyper vigilant about dropping things, we do have two (messy) young kids who are not and a lot of times Cali eats things she should not (or seeks them out herself, for example she once darted in a cabinet as it opened and ate a boullion cube) and ends up with a few days of throwing up + diarrhea. It's frustrating.

My problem is trash cans....ugghhh. One day I came home, she had turned over every trash cans. In addition to making sure there is nothing on the floor, I now have to make sure she can't get to the trash. I normally don't bring chocolate in the house but this one time I ate a snickers and threw the wrapper in the trash, sure enough she went after the wrapper. Thankfully there was no chocolate left.

These little guys are worse then kids. At least kids eventually grow up and move out (hopefully).
