New yorkie mom. Hi. Im new to the site and just became the new mommy of a beautiful yorkie girl. I have her for just 4 hours. To start. She is 8 week old and a day. She just sleep for the 4 hours i have her and don't know if this is normal or if it is because she just left her mommy and sister. Mom only had2 puppies. Is this just laying there sleeping part of the adjustment period? How long will this more ore less last? I try to fee her and she just lick the food but did no really eat. She also has a bald spot on her head and was wondering if this has ever happen to any of you puppies? She hasn't gone to the bathroom, no even pee. I might over reacting? What should i do to make her confortable and happy and let her kmow i want to do my best? Any advice and anything you can think of would be apreciated. Thanks. I don't have a name for her yet. |
Well, congratulations on your new baby..... But you have to realize she is really, really young - should probably still be with her mother, in fact! So you have got to pay attention to her eating and drinking - which it seems like you are. Pups do sleep a lot. Do you have a crate for her to sleep in? How about nutrical for hypoglycemia and/or stress. Hopefully one of the very experienced breeders will come forth and give you further guidance! Your heart is about the belong to that little pup :D |
Yes i got her nutrical today and have given it ro her twice. I just try to give her water but she just took a couple of licks. She hasn't gone to the bathroom yet. I was wondering if this is because of that transition period because she's on a new place, new smell, noises? What was your guys experience when you first got your puppies. |
HI and Welcome, I agree with YorkieMini, she should be with the mother. I am picking up two pups next week and they weren't completely removed from the mother until between 8 and 9 weeks. They will be 4 months old and had all their shots when we get them. Where did you get the pup? what breeder? Are you going to take her to the vet tomorrow? Could you post a pic of the bald spot so that one of the more expert people on the list can give you their opinion? Sounds like you are keeping a watchful eye on her. |
I have an appointment with the vet on saturday. She does seem allert for like a second or two when she heards a noise. I just put the bowl of water in the area were i have designated for her and she show some interest and sniff it then put her head down again and now she was showing some interest for her bowl of water again but have not drink from it yet. I got her as a gift from a friend of mine. I feel bad because i tought that it was ok for her to be away from mom since she's 8 weeks and a day old. I have a couple of toys for her but i don't know if i should give it to her? Thank you so much guys and i want you guys to know my intentions were not bad by acepting her to be remove from mom at 8 weeks. :( |
Hi & welcome to YT, It sounds as if you are really trying to be the best Yorkie mom so I would like to say that from what I know, the pup should have stayed with her mom until she was at least 12 wks old. As far as taking care of one that young, I cannot advise but there are wonderful, caring & knowledgeable people on here that, I'm sure, once they see your post, will advise you. Please continue to take good care of that sweet baby & if you don't have an answer to a problem when you need it, contact your vet ASAP (I hope you do have one because you may need one at any moment). |
Also, she's being introduce to solid because he was giving her milk replacement because the puppy mom had just stop feeding both puppies and if I'm no mistaking by 8 weeks they should be on solid food. Now my question isi read on another thread that i can mix her puppy food with baby food. Is this true? And if it is, which one? I read the beef flavor one. What do you guys think? What sugestions do you guys have about mixing her food. I i ow yorkies are picky eaters because my sister have one since puppies. Any sugestion regarding food would be greatly apreciated. |
Congratulations on getting a new puppy and welcome to YT. You came to the right place to ask questions. Is it possible for you to call the breeder and ask about these behaviors? Did the breeder say what type of food this puppy is used to eating? I got Barney when he was 11 weeks. Anna was around 6 years and Willie was 2 years. They all took a few days to adjust and get on normal eating/bathroom schedules. However, I don't remember having to work at getting any of them to drink. Please keep us posted on your baby's progress. Praying it all goes well for you and your new fur baby. |
I got her from my friend as a gift. He's not a breeder but for some reason his dog got pregnant by another yorkie. He said that he was giving her milk replacement after mom recently stop feeding when her theeth started to come out. |
Have you tried dipping your finger in water and letting her lick it off? Also, yes I would give her baby food to try to encourage her to eat. I'm hoping someone with more knowledge on this comes along and helps you out. |
Thank you ladies. I have seen somewhat what can be said a slight improvement. She wss quite curious when i was moping and squeezing the water out of the mop. She was somewhat curious when i sat next too her and kept looking at me. I'm hoping that all this is new being over worry and all this is part of her getting use to my home. |
Be sure this baby doesn't get cold. She needs a soft towel or blanket to snuggle into. Her food should at least be room or body temperature. These little babies are a lot of work to begin with but so worth it. They love unconditionally. |
Thank you for your advice. I haven't had her for s full day and i love her so much! I want to do the best for her. |
Good news ladies. I boil some chiken and mix a little bit of her food with it. It was more liquid than anything but she ate!!! She also went pipi. I think she was just holding it. Since the children are a sleep i put her on the floor, of course supervise and she's sploring. She's not going far from me but i think it is a good sing and best of all she keeps going back to her bowl and takes a few more licks of the xhiken broth and her food. I'm super happy because i feel thos is a good improvement and things are looking up for my lil princess. I will let you know once i have a name pick out for her. :) |
Yes, she will sleep a LOT - puppies do sleep a lot, so be prepared for that. Please, be very, very careful in giving her any new food(s) during this time...she could get sick on you and at this age, they go downhill very fast...so be careful! She is extremely vulnerable at this too young age (should still be with her Momma, really). |
