I wish I'd of thought of this sooner! I'm hearing imparted. Sophie is now 6 months and doing well on outside potty training. (I take her out frequently.) I wouldn't hear a bell so I just recently decided to try having her spin every time we go out so she can let me know when she needs to go. Hasn't done it on her own yet. Keeping my fingers crossed. Couldn't think of any thing else to try. Anyone else have a alternative? |
Push a button that activates a light? Spin sounds good though if she will come to you and do it. |
She could also bring you a specific object when she needs to go out. Really it is whatever is easiest for you to train her to do. |
Good ideas above. My boys tap me with their paws. Not sure how to train for this or how to explain how we tell what they need. Whatever you choose, use keywords and phrases, "Need to go potty?" Then when she does it, "Good potty!" A spin sounds good. Teddy uses a spin to answer "yes" to my questions, including "do you need to go potty?" |
Impaired not imparted and obviously spelling challenged as well. Ugh! Not sure how to edit it. |
Dinky sits by the door and looks at me. He is 5 now, and at this point, he will come and get me to follow him to the door. He never did this in the first house I had him in, because the layout of the house meant I usually could not see him at the door. Once we move and that was not a problem , the door thing worked. Good luck. I trained Dinky by taking him out every couple of hours or after he woke up or about 20 minutes after water intake. It took him a few weeks. He needed one refresher course, but he is a real champ about going potty outside now. |

Mine come to me and stand and stare intensely into my eyes....then when I say, "WHAT???" "Outside???" and that starts them to spinning in tight circles and barking, and that is a clear signal they want to go outside for a lap through the yard.....BUT, sometimes my dogs tell me fibs, and they just want to go outside for patrol, not a bathroom break, and I do not know how to stop that lying!!!! Rewarding for going potty versus no reward when they just go out and circle the yard and not go potty, makes no difference in behavior.....and I would much rather them lie and go outside for patrol, then not mention it at all and just go pee/poop on the floor/pee pad....... |
I like the idea of having them tap something that makes a light flash, I thought they sell lots of stuff like that to alert hearing impaired people to the door bell and phone and so forth. |
