Hi! New to Forum & Have a Question
 

Greetings all! So happy to have found this forum. Lots of great information here. My question is regarding Yorkie behavior. I have a male Yorkie who will be 4 years old next month. Walter is a big boy at 11 lbs. A month ago I got a female Yorkie puppy named Abby who is 5 months old and weighs in at 4.2 lbs. At first Walter wanted nothing to do with the pup. However, after one month, he plays and romps with her and things get rough. They growl, snarl and chase each other. There is also a lot of mouthing and wrestling on both their parts and I worry that Walter is going to seriously hurt the puppy. On the other hand, Abby adores Walter and won't leave him alone. Still not quite sure how Walter feels about Abby although they will lie down and fall asleep together also. Apologies for the length of this post. I guess my basic question would be is this normal behavior when a new pup is brought into the household. I have owned Poodles all of my life and Walter is my first Yorkie. I love the breed as they are so bright, joyful and full of zest for life. Any information regarding my question would be appreciated. Would love to post a picture of the two of them but so far not having any luck in doing that.

I can't give you much input about your two as I only have one very spoiled Yorkie. She does like the play with other Yorkies, however.

I know there are others on YT who have multiple pups who will give you some tips.

I have a male Yorkie that is 11 pounds and just turned 4 years old .. He has a sister ( Shih Tzu/Poodle mix ) that is 6 years old and 15 pounds and these two are crazy . They chase each other all around the house . They love to wrestle and growl . It is so funny to watch ...

If he lets her sleep with him then they are best buddies!

The snarling and stuff, it just play. I have a 9 year old Yorkie and 2 puppies (almost 7 months old). When we brought home the puppies the 9 year old stayed on the back of the couch all the time. If he came down to eat the puppies pounced on him and back to the couch he went. I had to feed him in a separate room so he could eat. After several weeks he started following the puppies around as they played and soon he was joining in. He is now bonded with one of the puppies (the 2 of them sleep with me) and he gets along well with the other puppy (she sleeps with my teenage daughter).

If they are hurting each other you will hear them yelp and the other should back off. Aside from that mine play rough and there is snarling involved but they are just playing. Let them play as long as one backs off when the other cries out. They will learn how hard they can bite without hurting the other. All 3 of mine are very good about how hard they can bite each other and also me. My puppy has his mouth on me all the time and I rarely have to say Ouch to him. My 9 year old can play rough with me and has only got me too hard once (I have had him almost 10 months).

The joyous sounds of multiple babies romping and rebel rousing and gleefully playing...no sweeter sounds to my ears or warmth to my heart!! I highlighted in JadeD's post exactly how I also see it......spot on, in my opinion. Welcome to the forum, I think you will most certainly enjoy the learning experiences and the discussions as well as the differences in opinions! TONS to learn and different experiences to share and appreciate and disagree with....come on in, take off your hat and coat, pull up a chair to the table and relax!

Thanks so much for your welcome greetings and advice. Guess my Yorkies' behavior is perfectly normal and I should not worry...just keep an eye out when things get carried too far. Also, glad to hear another member has a big male Yorkie. Walter is on Hill's Metabolic Prescription Diet per my vet's instructions...doesn't seem to help much. He's very muscular and was even as a puppy. Today things have calmed down considerably here, so now I'm thinking they might be not be feeling well. I've never had two dogs at once so I"ve got to learn the ropes. Thanks again all.

I have had 2 dogs most of the time. I have never had more than 2 before, until now, I have 4. I never dreamed I would have 4 dogs.

It went something like this. I had an English Setter whom I adored. We got another English Setter to add to the family and immediately after we got him we found out she had cancer. For over 2 years we did all we could for her, but eventually the day came where I had to make the really tough choice because she was suffering. So, we were down to 1 English Setter. A friend of mine planned to have puppies sometime in the somewhat near future and told me I could have a puppy from the litter. It would be a Yorkie mix. I was so thrilled. A couple months later I was handed a 9 year old Yorkie who needed a home that day, so I took him home. My husband felt that we could still get the puppy and have 3 dogs. The puppies are born and my daughter just fell in love with one of the girl puppies so we let her have that as her 17th birthday present. However, my husband and me just loved one of the male puppies who was Yorkie colored, but started out chocolate and tan and then turned to black and gray. He is an odd color. 2 weeks before we were to pick up my daughter's puppy my friend told me that no one wanted him because of his coloring, which we loved. We told her that if the puppy was still there when we picked up the other puppy we would take him, but my husband started asking me what it would cost extra for him (shots, fixed, food, etc) and told me he really thought his coloring was awesome and asked when we would get another puppy like that. So, 2 days later I told her we would take him.

Having 4 has been an adventure, but they are the best! Our English Setter has free run of most of the main level of the house so he guards it at night. My rescue and our puppy sleep in our bed with us and my daughter's puppy sleeps with her. Quite often I wake up and can't find the puppy at night and discover he is curled up in my husband's arms, it is so adorable. My husband has always said he hates little dogs, but this puppy has him wrapped around his paw for sure! LOL

Welcome to YT....I had 3 females, all 3 years apart, every time a new fur kid entered the older one / ones would watch the new kid from the safety of the sofa, it would take several weeks for the older one / ones to finally engage in playing with the new one, yes, joyous sounds of rough housing, growls and barking, as JadeD wrote they will get to know when to rough is not acceptable to the other. Sit back and enjoy the ride and entertainment puppies grow so fast,BTW, my two older girls weighed 13 lbs as adults, the baby as an adult was 9Lbs. My two older girls weights were 13 lbs when I got the 3rd baby and she was appox. 10 or 11 weeks old when the wrestling and rough housing began, and it was two older against the baby, but the baby always won lol. If they are SLEEPING together as JadeD wrote, they are best buds. If they are getting to wild and crazy you can always stop them for a rest period. Please keep us posted on them, we LOVE puppy stories.

lol we all know about the sweet innocent face, they are mischievous little rascals and if there is another dog in the family it is always the sweet innocent looking one that is the instigator. When I had my pack of 3 it was always the baby that would start with them, she would bite hard, the older one would yelp, I would tell the baby "go kiss kissie sister say you're sorry" and she would. Came a point several months down the road when hard playing and an older one would yelp, with out me saying anything she would run over, kiss her sister then look at me to say "see I said I'm sorry" lol she was soooo cute and funny.
