13 year old yorkie with arthritis My lovely teacup 6lb yorkie, Spike, is 13 and has horrible athritis. His head is always down and he slips and trips every time he walks. He has no energy which seems normal for a dog his age. He's never had any health issues and loves to give kisses. He only has a few teeth so i either soak his food or get kibble thats small enough or soft enough his gums can chew it. What I'm wondering is, is there any pain he could be feeling and how can I make him more comfy? He shows no sign of pain but I'm wondering if something could be bothering him anyway that has no visual signs? I know cuddling and stuff is ideal however he's an extremely independent dog and just relies on me to keep him fed. He has his own space which he shares with his Maltese sister, Copeland. They have very different personalities and almost polar opposites however they get along very well. I just want Spike to be as happy as possible and live a comfy, good, long life. Thank you!! :animal-pa:animal-pa |
Get him Cosequin caps for small dogs...pull the cap apart and mix it in his food...I start any of my seniors out on that when they start aging and having difficulty with joints and arthritis....this stuff is fabulous! I can promise you will see a major difference in your little gentleman in less than a week! As he gets older, I adjust up to two caps a day, then I switch over to Glyco-Flex III....crumble it up across their food...all this stuff is palatable and they have no problem eating it......and it WORKS!!! |
A 13 yr old w/ arthritis who always holds his head down and trips/slips makes me think that he is indeed showing signs of pain. If he wasn't in pain, he wouldn't be holding his head funny. Remember too that dogs mask a *lot* of pain... If it were me, I'd be wanting to give something daily to manage both inflammation and pain for this little senior kiddo. He probably needs it and will need it for the rest of his life. I'd get him into the vet soon :). |
I agree with Wylie's Mom, vet visit to determine if it arthritis or something else. |
Another agreement to the vet suggestion. I could even be his vision at that age. So please schedule a vet appointment and let us know how he is doing. |
