Oak Leaf Itch Mite (worst thing ever!) Apparently there is such a thing as an Oak Leaf Itchy Mite, and they are really bad this year. At least, in this part of the country. Repellents don't do much good because they fall from trees onto their host. The bite is the worst thing ever with an incredibly intense itch that lasts for 7-10 days. The mite burrows into the skin (gross!). I have lived here my whole life and have never until recently heard of such a crazy thing. So I am just putting this out there, if you have oak trees and you or your pets are more itchy than usual this could be the culprit. Why oh why, would the creation of such a critter ever be useful to the environment? :p:rolleyes: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...ap1dvork3hHJvg |
The only thing that stops them from itching is covering the bites with clear nail polish. My boyfriend and I were covered with them a couple years ago and it literally drove us insane. We could not sleep at night. We would wake up with bloody fingernails and blood streaks all over our bodies . We seriously felt like crazy people. |
Omg, these sound horrible! Maybe Benadryl would help w/ the itch/reaction...? |
I'm relating... Last weekend I was covered with bites and they were so awful I could not sleep and guess I was scratching them until they bled. Not sure if we have those things here, but we are surrounded by oak trees. Poor dogs and humans that get these things. It kind of sounds like chiggers. |
P.S. I just looked them up and they are in my area. Worst itching I have ever had. And I was sitting under an oak tree. Hmmm. |
Thanks for the heads up. Hope I am not putting the eye on myself by writing this. My house is surrounded by oak trees. The oak trees in my back yard form a canopy, Cody and I are in the yard several times a day for an hour of hunting and playing. So far no bites, glad to have this info. for just in case. |
