itchy yorkie hi does anyone have any experience with yorkie skin conditions. my 1 year old sophie seems to have a skin issue that the vets are trying to figure out. she at first had red spots all over her body about 2 months ago. vet thought maybe she got bit by a flea and had a reaction to the bite. which i doubt cuz neither one of my yorkies has fleas. so they put her on antibiotic and gave me a gentamycin spray to spray on her body. it cleared right up. then a few weeks later she got red dry scaly patches on the inner areas of her thighs. went back to vet and they gave me antibiotic and told me to give her benadryl every 8 to 12 hours. they wanted to rule out infection again to then see if she has a food or enviornmental allergy. she always seems itchy even though im giving her benadryl once a day. she constantly chews on her feet and scratches her ear so much she made her ear bleed. theres no ear infection cuz they checked her ear. i feel so bad. nothing in her diet has changed so i cant figure out what she could be allergic to.... her skin has red areas and is very flaky. if anyone can give me any advice to ease her itchiness or maybe an idea i can throw at the vets as to what this could be. i would appreciate it thanks. |
My Boomer seems to have some type of allergy according to the vet. He has black spot along his lower abdomen. The vet told me to rinse him with lukewarm water daily and watch his scratching since we are coming into Allergy Season. He does seem to bite and scratch his lower half but not on a consistent basis. I plan to take him to the vet next month if it doesn't improve. I am also in the process of changing his diet from chicken to Lamb food and will see how that goes. I heard chicken can cause some allergies as well. |
When I transitioned my puppies from puppy food to adult food, I put them on a chicken and rice blend. The one itched all the time and the other one itched much of the time. I switched them over to a bison blend now and they rarely itch. Maybe you need to look into changing their food, especially since they are chewing on their feet which is one of the symptoms of food allergies? |
ok thank you. my vet had told me if it doesn't get better he would have to change her food. i hope it works cuz i feel so bad for her. i just want her to be ok. |
Well, did they do a skin scraping of the "red" or scaly areas, bc they should have...? That would show whether or not there was a bacterial overgrowth (infection) going on. That would be pyoderma. The paw chewing and licking is the cardinal sign of allergies. For allergies, read this entire thread: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...tart-here.html |
