When can she go out? Sophie had her first visit with the vet yesterday and got her first shots. Because she's so tiny, her breeder opted to hold off on vaccines until she was just a bit bigger. Apparently there was another one in the litter that had a bad reaction. Parvo scares the crap out of me and we're about to move into a neighborhood with a community yard at the end of this month. How soon after her vaccines is she protected? I'd lose my mind if anything happened to her. |
How tiny is this baby? Just curious......I start my shots at 8 weeks of age, and they are pretty small at that age! Just curious how "tiny" and how old this baby is.....wondering if the age is perhaps the reason shots were not given. I do not allow anyone over to see and handle my babies until they are 12-13 weeks old...they have 2 vaccinations from a series of 3 shots in them by then.....but I would not take an unvaccinated baby out into public until it is completely vaccinated. If your breeder is doing vaccinations, the baby will be 14-16 weeks old usually by the time the 3rd vaccination is given.....and you want to wait for a week after the last shot is given before you expose that little baby to all the diseases being shed in dog parks and public areas where vaccinated as well as unvaccinated dogs roam freely. |
:) Well, this is probably absolutely nothing to do with anything, but 'over here' shots are given in 2 batches...and then we have to wait 10-14 days after the last ones are given before they're allowed out. |

Please be ultra careful and do not take any risks with your puppy. You cannot be too careful...Several years ago a friend lost a mother (Rottweiler) and her entire litter of 8 week old puppies to parvo----and from first inkling something was amiss to losing all of them took less than two days. Until the series of shots has been completed and your vet says she's "safe" keep your pup safely at home--no visiting canines either. Obviously I am waaay over the top on this particular issue; I just feel the more careful you are (for a couple of months), the safer your little one. Enjoy your teeny-tiny tot! And please forgive my hyper-ness on this...! |
The only place my pup went before all the vaccines was out in our yard to potty train. I crossed my fingered all was ok. 😀 |
Just to be sure, after all vaccines/shots I'd wait at least a week after the last to let it all settle in her body. My vet gave my girl Benedryl before every shot she had, to help prevent a reaction. The only problem she ever had (and I regret not insisting she had those shots separate) with those shots was feeling very sore/pain from the one that did a combo (several vaccines in one shot) along with another shot (she woke up crying from pain that evening T_T). So make sure shots are done separately (one-shot combos not counting). |
