Adding A new dog to Our family? Advice tips anyone? Ok Well I am a Mommy to a 5 year old female spayed Yorkie named Mitsi. Shes so well mannered and loves to play and is good with other dogs as long as they are not big and rough then she gets a little intimidated. Any how, there is a rescue near where we live and this little ChiWeenie was on death row, He time was up literally in hours and My Mom and I stepped in and saved Her. So needless to say She will be coming to stay with us to see if Her and Mitsi get along, if they do not then My Mom will happily take Her and see if She is a better fit. Apparently a lot of people are getting these "designer" dogs like chiweenies and when they realize they actually require care then they send them off to a shelter. The Little one is house trained and they tell Me good with other dogs and very shy and timid (submissive). Mitsi is my baby, I just am worried that by adding a new dog to the mix She is going to feel like I am replacing her. Another thing Mitsi likes to cuddle but not very often, (Ive brought this up with my vet to see if she was in pain or anything and apparently some dogs are just like that). This new pup loves to cuddle and be held. So Im not sure how this mix is going to go. If anyone has any advice or tips Id love to hear them! Thank you for reading this, I am sorry it was long :aimeeyork |
GOOD FOR YOU!!! That was a real stand up thing to do, save a life that was about to end!! Congratulations on your precious new baby boy!! Now it may take a little while for Mitsi to get used to her new housemate....give it time, do not show favoritism to the new baby....Mitsi still gets everything first, and I think they will eventually get along just fine. Just dont let Mitsi feel she is being displaced by this new comer.....when giving treats, she always gets hers first....fed first, watered first, even set time apart JUST for interacting with her and her alone..... Thank you for taking in this unfortunate little baby, just because it was born and in a situation where it ended up in a shelter......you saved a little precious life that did not deserve to end up in that situation! GOOD JOB!!! |
First... THANK YOU for saving him!!!! Whether he stays with you or your mom, I'm sure you/your mom/ and the new furrie will have a wonderful life! As for the introduction, is Mitsi good with other dogs as well? If they haven't met yet, I'd like to suggest you have their first meeting in a neutral area. Let them check each other out. Perhaps even play a bit. (Maybe let them meet at a dog park?) And as Yorkiemom suggested, Mitsi should be the one to get everything first. Even greetings. Good luck and please share pictures when you can! |
So far so good Well This week were counting as a trial run to see how it goes at Our Home. So far so good, lots of tail wagging and sniffing, Mitsi tried to play but as Little Freya as weve taking to calling her is recovering from a Spay, Shes doing great. However She has taken to laying in Mitsi's bed, Mitsi doesnt like that at all and I am not sure how to get her to lay in her own bed. We have both Dogs very nice beds to! I am also taking your advice, Mitsi gets all of her things first. She seems to like our little house guest most of the time, however others She seems jealous. |
I'm glad things are working out, they might end up sharing the bed, hope everything works out. |
It's only been a few days that you have little Freya who is really not up to par due to recovering from her spay. Misti likes other dogs, give Misti more time, sometimes it takes weeks for pup # 1 to realize pup # 2 is there to stay. When I had my last two girls they both had their own beds, my older girl (6 yo) was so much in love with her new sister (after losing two older sisters) would not sleep in her bed, she shared the babies bed, they were the best of buds for 7 years until my oldest girl left for rainbow bridge. Misti will grow to love her new sister, she just needs more time to get use to having a kid sister around. Keep Misti first in everything just as you have been doing. Again bless you for saving Freya and giving her a second chance in life. |
