getting new puppy to eat kibble.. hi guys... as some of you may know.. i've recently got a new puppy nami (about to be 6 months soon).. breeder sent her with some food that she has bee on, but when she came to us, at first she did eat, about 1/3 cup of food.. but after that she just simply refused to eat, and i started to mix some rice and chicken broth to her food, but then she'd just spit out her kibble and just picked out rice and licked off the broth.. ever since then i've been trying to get her to eat orijen puppy food, but then again. she just simply does not want to eat it! i've talked to this pet store near me that sells orijen and other brands of food, and they recommended me orijen adult freeze dried food.. and what do you know.. she likes it.. he also recommended some goat milk, other supplements for picky eaters, which adds alot of protein to her food.. so far she also loves the goat milk, and i give that to her separately at times, adding coconut oil and fish oil to help her skin and coat.. but i do add a little bit to her freeze dried food, if she doesn't eat much at all, to try to help her eat a bit more.. even if she likes it though, she does not eat all of her recommended amount, and eats about 80% or less of her food per meal.. i'd like to get her to eat some kibble though, since she still is a puppy and it has more calories, and she def. needs to gain some more weight. (also advised by the vet) she's only 2.4lbs last time she was checked at the vet, about a week ago.. so how do i get her to eat kibble again? i feed her at 7am, 12pm, and at 7pm again, or atleast try to... just depends on how much she ate during her regular meal time.. (like.. if she didn't bother eating her lunch... i'd try again at 2 or 3pm ish..) i was told with my other puppy kupo, if he's skipping meals, just take the food away, and give him lunch later, so he'd be hungry to eat... but since she's so tiny, i'm scared of possibility of hypoglycemia... what should i do? thanks in advance |
Maybe she's being fed too many times a day? I feed Duchess twice a day, once in the morning before I leave for work and then again in the evening when I get home from work. If her portion in the morning is too large she won't eat in the evening or she will eat very little in the evening. I have to make sure her portions are just right. It took me forever to find the right food for her. I went through several different brands. I finally found something that she loves as long as I use boiled chicken for a topper, she will eat it. Try mixing in boiled chicken. It's too the point where Duchess won't eat unless boiled chicken is in it. |
Have you tried sprinkling a bit of grated Parmesan cheese over her food, this usually perks up a dogs appetite to eat. |
@yavenay, i've fed kupo 3x a day with that schedule and he was fine with it... and i've tried to mix boiled chicken, but she just picks out whatever i mix in and spits the kibble out.. lol T_T; but i thought feeding 2x on her may be bit too much since she's only 2lbs.. and i'm scared about hypoglycemia :/ meh i'm not sure what to do... i just gave her breakfast an hour ago and she didnt bother eating it much.. maybe 2 bites of her wet freeze-dried food... (i mixed in some kibbles and she didnt even bother touching that again)... after about 30 min of her not eating, i just took the food away and i plan on trying to giving it to her around noon..... i did give her nutrical for just incase too. @matese i haven't tried parmasean cheese one, since the one we have garlic in it.. but i did try other supplements to make her food more appetizing.. like etta says liver sprinkles and goat milk... but she just licks those up and not eat the kibbles lol. i donno what to do.. i think i'm just paranoid cuz of her size.. i just want her to get used to her kibbles.. ;/ |
Are you opposed to just feeding the freeze dried? Bc there is nothing wrong w/ skipping kibble and just feeding that. Before I started feeding the pre-made frozen raw, I started out w/ freeze dried raw and it was excellent! I too would recommend sprinkling Parmesan cheese on her food. |
i just thought regular puppy food might be better for her since more calories and such, and she's not trying to chew anything with those puppy teeth.. thought kibble would help her with her teeth too. i guess i could give parmesean cheese a go, but i feel like shes just going to lick it up and spit the food back out lol.. |
Kibble Your baby is very tiny and perhaps does not need so much food? Some dogs are also very picky and changing food many times seems to make them worse! They hang out for the 'good stuff' and won't eat the regular food or kibble. Are you sure your pup does not have any teeth or health issues that are making her not want to eat? If she is healthy then perhaps the kibble size is too big? You could break it up into smaller pieces and add some tasty topper mixed in so she cannot pick it out. You could also try adding some liquid to soften the kibble. Not so easy to pick out good bits from wet kibble!! I know my dog, who loves his food, picks out the kibble and throws it on the floor at first, eats the chicken bits and then eats the kibble he put on the floor! These dogs have weird eating habits sometimes! Good luck. |
ive been giving recommended amount based on her weight, so i dont think i'm giving her too much... and as for her health wise, other than her having her puppy teeth, she was found to be healthy by the vet.. i did try to break up the kibble at first.. then soak.. but she still does not have any interest... she just seems to be completely in favor with the wet food.. i tried to see if she does eat the food she spits out.. but nop, she's done with the piece after licking up the *good* stuff lol was gonna give her the kibble again for lunch, but she completely denied it.. my bf thinks we should just stick with the freeze dried orijen one... do you think this would be ok? i mean that food is labeled for adult dogs.. it does have serving amount for puppies. but i still much rather give her regular puppy food than adult food.. -_-; |
Puppy food and adult food have different nutritional composition for specific reasons....puppies are growing and maturing and setting bone plates in place.....their nutritional requirements are very different than those of the adults....having re-read the posts, you have already climbed onto that dizzying changing merry-go-round of this dog food and that dog food.....all I would advise at this stage of the game, make sure whatever you are feeding, it is designed SPECIFICALLY for a PUPPY's nutritional requirements.......they need specific formulas/percentages for developing tissue, muscle, bone, brains, etc.....these needs MUST be met or you are depriving the growing tissues of required nutrition. I would just tell you to be absolutely certain that whatever you end up feeding this baby, you are meeting nutritional requirements, as those are the building blocks of that pups structure....you will really mess up the "completed structure" if you do not start out with the correct nutritional building blocks. |
@yorkiemom1, the changing dog food thing, it was recommended by the vet and the pet food store person, as well as the orijen company, as she was not eating when she came to us.. and they wanted her to make sure that she eats for now.. i wrote here.. because i am trying to get her back to her puppy food, but i just can't get her to eat it. i know that puppy needs their food for their reason, and that's why i'm so hesitant on giving her that freeze-dried food that she was recommended to.. and that she's eating now.. so far she only tried her original breeder food, and orijen puppy (kibble) and orijen freeze dried adult food that she's on now.. so not much changing going on... well other than regular boiled chicken at first.. but stopped that now. shes so stubborn and so picky i donno what to do... -_- she definitely needs to gain weight and she can't if she won't eat.. |
Not all yorkies have hypoglycemia....I have NEVER had a baby that I had produced from my breeding stock, suffer with this condition. I think a lot of people think all little dogs/yorkies are predisposed to this condition and they are not. That does not mean you can STARVE them for a week without issues......I understand your frantic attempts, trying to get this baby to eat. It has just been my experience, watching people jump from food to food to food, so upset, so distraught, so confused and worried about this tiny little dog that is pulling all your strings, flipping all your switches, NOT eating..... If your puppy does not hbave a predisposition to hypoglycemia, your baby will be fine. "........breeder sent her with some food that she has bee on, but when she came to us, at first she did eat, about 1/3 cup of food..but after that she just simply refused to eat, and i started to mix some rice and chicken broth to her food, but then she'd just spit out her kibble and just picked out rice and licked off the broth.." THIS is right where your train jumped the tracks! She seemed to be eating just fine...1/3 cup of food for a puppy is a pretty good amount, unless you are dealing with a Great Dane puppy! A 6 month old Yorkie's stomach is only the size of a pecan or maybe a walnut. 1/3 cup of dog food during the day, for a pup this age, is fine! I feed my adults, weighing 4-5 lbs, 1/2 a cup during the winter, during summer when they are out swimming and running, chasing bubbles and playing in the sprinklers, 3/4 a cup....until it gets so hot they slow down again, and food intake is cut back....they also get 1/4 cup veggies mixed into their ration of dog food....but these are grown dogs! My point is, your puppy is getting enough dog food at 1/3 cup! But I see in the first post you say she was eating 1/3 cup of what she came to you eating....then after a while, she stopped and you went to rice and chicken broth mixed in, and she picked out the rice and licked the broth..... What did the breeder have her on, that she initially had been eating? I suggest you go back to what she had been getting, as long as it is a puppy formula. I would take about 1 teaspoon of baby food, chicken, mix it up in about 1/4 cup warm water, and mix that into whatever kibble you are feeding this pup.....that will give the smell of chicken but pup can not pick out hunks of chicken or rice from the dog food. And that is what I would stick with.....when that baby gets hungry enough, she will eat what she was eating when you got her, with the addition of the "great human chicken baby food gravy".....as long as she does not have a problem with hypoglycemia...and not all yorkies have this....some people think ALL little dogs all have this condition...NOT TRUE.....I have never had any of my babies that were born from my breedings, suffer with this, even when they are going through weaning and eating is on/off.....if you are really concerned about this happening to your baby, get some NutriCal from the vet, and dose the baby with a dab, 4-5 times a day(8am-12 noon-4pm-8pm-12mn) to keep blood sugar levels on an even keel.....but I can tell you, this baby WILL eat after a day....especially some food that she is familiar with, what she was on when you got her.....you have to get her BACK on this by adding a dab of the baby chicken and warm water...... This is what I would do....I have never had a puppy die from starvation, nor have I ever had an adult fall over dead from starvation..... |
oops, i meant to say 1/8 cup. i used to feed 1/3 cup a day for kupo, 1/8 cup each meal, that was my bad. but ty for the advise and ty for the information on hypoglycemia. i was paranoid about this ever since i had my first yorkie, kupo. but i'll try to see if she'd eat the food she came with... tried that before too and she didnt wanna bother eating it.. :/ |
I'm kind of in the same boat. Colby is now 7mo. Getting him to eat is ridiculous. He will straight up refuse to eat for days at a time. I asked around here, at my vet and another local vet, internet searches, everywhere I can get information. General consensus wast that I needed to pick a food, whatever that food is and stick to it. I tried a homemade recipe of chicken and rice with supplements, he will eat the chicken rice mixture without the supplements(that he needs). Settled on Stella and Chewy's chicken mixers that I slowly added into the rice. Was working out nicely, finally got him on only the Stella and Chewy's because he needed the nutrients. He is on another hunger strike again. I'm afraid he's already too skinny. But he is over 10lbs so vet says wait. He will eat. I'm at a loss. this is getting stressful and expensive. |

I agree with the vet....he WILL not starve to death! He will eat! Just ask ANY stray dog on the side of the highway that is eating roadkill and rocks....he will eat before he starves to death! I would do what the vet said...leave him on the Stella and Chewys (I DO know that some of those foods you add to dry dog food, are NOT designed to be a complete meal...I am not familiar with this brand, just make sure it is not designed to be added to a balanced dog food....my cousin has a little poodle....she feeds that baby a packet of something she buys at the dogfood store....it is DESIGNED to be an additive, not a complete meal and she mixes that with the Lil Bites by Healthy Choice....I dont know the name of the stuff, it comes in many different flavors, little foil packs a little larger than the size of a deck of cards, with tiny little pieces of chicken and veggies and gravy.....that little poodle would KILL you for that meal!!! (If you are interested, I will see if I can get the name of the little packets of dog food mixers.....) She gets it at Petsmart or that other place....PetCo!!! |
The mixers says you can add a scoop to their normal meal. Or you can serve just that. Its right on the package and the website. I am just waiting now. HW does get upset tummies occasionally. Vet prescribed pepcid for the acid. I gave him the prescribed dose. We will try again at normal dinner time. |
