Playing outside help Any ideas how I can play with my 8 month Yorkie outside without a leash or a fence? It's cooling off here and I would love to play with Ruger outside, chase, fetch,run together, etc. The problem is: play is limited on a leash. I'm afraid if off leash he will go off chasing birds, butterflies, anything that moves. And he can run as fast as Superman. He's been leash trained since 11 weeks. Does very well, but I'm in control. Really want to have some fun outside. Thanks |
I made a long tether for Piper (@18 feet) so I can keep her reined-in on our walk to park, but once there, I let her take advantage of length. She, too, is lightning fast, but I can pretty much keep up using her 'custom' tether. It's made of a light leash-like material and I made the loop using wide elastic to fit my wrist, which feels very secure without me having to hold it. Anyway, just an idea...have fun with your rambunctious, happy little partner!! Isn't the cooler weather just delightful? |

Zip line is great idea, I used it on my two dogs, but, they were much older, not fast like the speed of lighting, well, at least one was not. When I was camping and they were puppies with the speed of lighting lol I would tie 25 foot of clothes line to their harness, then we played Frisbee, catch and fetch. |
I use a training lead. I have a 30 foot one. It is like fabric so not a lot of weight to it. My Yorkies can run all over on it. Sometimes I hook one of the puppies to each end of it and they can play and wrestle all over the yard, but if I need to grab them I can grab any part of the 30 foot lead and have them. I ordered mine off Amazon and it was not all that pricey, I think under $15. I also use this for training as well. I can have one person hold it and take the dog to one side of the yard and then I can go to another side and call the dog to me and they can come, but if they try to take off we still have control of them. I use it for my older Yorkie as well and just hook the end of it under my lawn chair I am sitting in, usually in the middle of my yard. He can wander all over the yard that way without me worrying about him wandering off. They are very useful to have. |
outside play I like the idea of the cable run, I used a really long rope for my dog, and as she would near the end of the 30 foot, I would yell out "Jaz, come!" and lightly pull her back, and give her a little piece of chicken. I did this for several days, and at the end of a week, she would come immediately when I said "Jazz Come". No more rope was needed, she runs and plays, she loves to chase lizards, but she always comes back when I call her. I still give her the occasional treat when she runs back to me, but now a scratch and a kiss have the same affect. |
