My 4 year old Yorkie has stopped eating I have made 2 visits to our Vet and spent over $800.00 trying to find the cause of this problem. She was vomiting in the beginning but that has stopped but she still has a dry heave from time to time. The Vet took blood work and gave her a Barium and several X rays and found nothing. We are still not eating. anyone got anything else I can try? |
What are you feeding them? If they won't eat dog food then I would start making their food. Try some white rice, boiled chicken, oatmeal, plain yogurt. There are a lot of things for a dog to eat but I would start with these things. I would do whatever it takes to get my dog to eat. I have a 9 year old Yorkie that eats well, unless we go on vacation. If I leave him home even during the day with my family and I am gone he will not eat until I return home. I could not leave him and go somewhere because I fear he would not eat. I take him everywhere I go. When we are staying away from home he will not touch his dog food (that he eats great at home). I make sure I have oatmeal, yogurt, chicken, etc to feed him while we are on vacation. When we return home he goes right back to his dog food. I would rather get him to eat than to have him go days to a week without eating. I would probably seek out another vet in the future and if you still can't get the dog to eat. If you can get them eating these food items, I would slowly start to add dog food into it and keep increasing the amount of dog food every few days and decrease the amount of stuff you are making for the dog. See if you can't get them to start eating again. It does sound like something is not right. Although some Yorkies are just really picky eaters and you have to find a new food that they do like. Good luck and I hope you get them eating again soon! |
Thanks for the advise, Nicole has always eaten well. I feel like she has something wrong but according to our vet he can't find anything. She is also sleeping more lately than normal. I will definitely try oatmeal and chicken and rice. She has been eating small amounts of chicken. She is a large Yorkie(15 lbs.) and normally is hungury Thanks, Tom W |
I agree with chicken, boiled boneless chicken breast, trim off the fat. shred it into the cooked rice, it's easy on the digestive system. I am going through the same thing with my boy, all of a sudden he's refusing to eat the kibble he's been on for 1.5 years, so we are doing musical dog food. Cody is NOT a picky eater so I am really surprised that he's turning his nose up at several new kibbles I have tried. But he will eat if I hand feed a small portion, and he'll finish it before he goes to sleep for the night, in the past he has always vacuumed up his food. If your girl turns down the chic and rice, try just the chic, if she refuses that I would get another vet for a 2nd opinion. Good luck and please keep us posted. |

Sending well wishes for your girl. |
The Blood test was for Pancreatitis and it was fine. The Vet said he saw no Cancer or any blockages when he X-rayed her. he cleaned her out and saw nothing. I noticed that she had been eating some grass for about 2 weeks prior to her stopping eating. Although she is a large Yorkie (15 Lbs.) she is tall and thin. She is beginning to eat some shredded chicken but that's about it. |

I agree completely.....I would be sitting on the front steps of an internal med specialist.....if you can not find one quickly, I would be headed to the vet school of your State. Every hour that you delay getting this baby a diagnosis and treatment is doing damage she may not recover from.....I will pitz around with a vet (and I have an EXCELLENT vet) for a short period of time, but if I am not getting answers or resolutions, I am off to A&M Vet School. |
I too would be seeing an Internist if this isn't gone now. Also, is it possible she has any reflux? http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...wallowing.html |
