Stung or bitten by some kind of worm My little guy was outside to potty he gets into everything. Constantly saying "leave it". But he doesn't listen. He is 8 months. My husband brought him in and said he picked up a leaf with some kind of fuzzy worm or some kind of caterpillar on. My husband got it from him, but too late. Ruger bit into it. Then he started acting like it was hard for him to swallow. He vomited 3 times that was fomey. I gave him small pieces of ice to eat. He still seemed like he couldn't swallow right. He also coughed a lot. About 2 hrs. Later he slept. Woke up a bit then went to bed. He slept well and in the morning seemed fine. Any thoughts what it was he bit? Anyone know much about caterpillars or fuzzy worms? Don't want this happen again. And of course, he didn't learn a thing. Went out first thing this morning and grabbed leaves. Aweeee! |
1 Attachment(s) Poor Ruger! Did your husband or you catch a glimpse of the worm -- can you describe it? Our most common worms here are tent worms and one of the "wooly worms." I'm looking for info on worms on google and see that a bunch of people reported the same problems with their dogs that you describe: vomiting, gagging, coughing. Sounds like the common worms are not toxic, but cause a throat irritation. The first year is the hardest with these little guys wanting to eat everything they find! I still have to watch my guys though and I'm constantly harassing them, "Leave it!" or "that's yucky" or "you don't want that." Max shares Ruger's love of leaves :D Attachment 407452 |

If you google "asp worms" or "asp caterpillars", you will see several rows of pictures of fuzzy, furry asp worms.....and they DO sting the fire out of you!!! DO NOT TOUCH THEM!!! |
Any bite or sting can cause an allergic reaction. I would not let it go till morning again as it could be too late next time. Some stings can be accumulative, meaning they are worse each time & can be fatal to our babies. Any kind of bite or sting that causes the type of reaction you described should always be considered an Emergency situation & treated as such. I am glad that your baby is ok now but next time , Go to the vet ASAP. |
If you know he gets bit again, also keep the bug in a jar (do not squash it) just in case you need it for the vet. If you want it dead, pour rubbing alcohol in the jar. It kills them, but does not destroy them. It always help the vet to know what bit/stung the pet. |
You are very, very lucky your little one survived without having gone to the vet. ANY time a sting/bit results in swelling, breathing difficulties, or difficult swallowing you should head to the vet *immediately* as this could be life threatening and result in death quickly. ALWAYS have Benadryl on hand in your doggie ER/First Aid kit - that's what you should've given her immediately. I keep both cut up pills of Benadryl and the childrens liquid Benadryl (if I have to force it in). Have the doses written down or memorized. Do you have a first aid kit? IF not, there is a guide in the ER section. |
