what should i do? I have a question are yorkies natrual watchdogs, because i read they make great ones? Do i have to train them to be one or are they natrually? |
I would say "naturally". I never had to train our fur kids to bark at the door bell, or people coming into the yard etc...LOL :D |
I'm trying to teach Scout to STOP barking at people that come to the door so much! It's ok for a couple barks to let us know somebody is coming, but he goes on for about 10 minutes after! |
I have not had to teach my girls anything...they know when someone has driven up in the driveway or at the front door!! They are great at letting us know when something around the house is not right.... |
I think it comes natural to them.Mine go CRAZY when they hear my husbands car pull up outside or if they hear the door bell.Sometimes someone will pass infront of our door to go up to the next floor (we live in a block of apartments) and they will here that too, even if we dont! They hear EVERYTHING and when they think someone is coming or something isnt right, they bark:D More than once Iv had to apologize for the barking when someone has come to visit lol. |
They are naturally great watchdogs. They were originally breds te be watchers and rat catchers. And it definately is still in 'em! We won't even hear anything and Bouncer will be at the door about to eat whatever it is he has heard. |
This morning around 3:30, I was sitting here at my computer working on a graphic and the three dogs started going nuts. I got up and looked out of my dining room window and sure enough . . . there was a Suburban full of teenagers that had pulled up in the driveway. I went into my teenager's room to let her know she had company when I heard the "knock" on the window. I scared the heck out of two teenagers! LOL When they came inside, they were shocked that I was awake. They know we have the three yorkies . . . . even if I had been sleeping, I would have been awake before the knock on the window. :) |
They are for sure Natural watch dogs. Tigger can wake up and begin growling and barking in a heartbeat. we often have to calm him down by saying good boy, we're ok. after a few minutes he's back to sleep. |
Most small dogs are great natural watch dogs. They alert you quickly to anything going on outside or inside your home. Small dogs, as we know, are great little "barkers." A watch dog and a guard dog are different things. Watch dogs "watch" and let you know that something is going on. A guard dog is a dog that will attack, fight, and guard you from harm.....especially if trained to do so. Carol Jean |
Mine are "natural". They just seem to let you know anything going on in what they consider "their" territory. |
Lucy is a better watch dog then my Griff, my German Shepherd. Griff is getting old, and I think a bit hard of hearing. But he sure hears Lucy bark and that gets his attention. It is so cute when they are both at the screen door. She has to stand to see out and he is there beside her. They are quite a team. |
Mine are good watch dogs. They let me know if someone is at the door or just walking down the side walks. No, I didn't train them...it just came naturally for them! :) |
We are in training right now. What we are going to do is let them bark once or twice and then teach them to go to "their place" (bed, pillow, crate, cage, etc). We haven't gotten to that point yet but it's coming soon. Good luck. I couldn't stand to hear TWO Yorkies barking up a storm!*! |
