My precious adopted yorkies i have now had them for three days and they do not play at all. They are sisters and 3 years old. The one yorkie, her name is coco and she is a runt and skittish, her sister Bella is bigger and is coming around when it comes to giving kisses and being close. How do i get them to play? I know very little about them, please help. |
Welcome to YT, thank you for rescuing, and thank you for rescuing siblings. You only have them a few days, it takes time for them to adjust to a new home, new smells, new schedule and most importantly you, a new person. They have to build trust in you, don't rush them, they will come around, everything comes in baby steps with some rescues. Play, like in play with each other or play with toys? Try rolling a ball and letting them get it. Tease them with a squeaky toy then toss it, let them get it. If you have a yard take them to it and roll the ball. No back yard, do you have a dog park near you, try to go with no other dogs are there, just your two, roll the ball, tease with a toy. When I adopted my boy at 2.5 y/o (he is now 4 y/o) he didn't know how to play with toys because he never had a toy. What I suggested above is how I got my boy to play. I didn't know what toy he would like so I got an assortment, rubber squeaky one, plush squeakys, assorted size balls. He prefers rubber squeaky, but will play with the plush also. I also took an old sock, tied a knot in the middle of it and toss it to him. |
1 Attachment(s) Piper isn't big on playing; she's about four and I've had her about a year. She likes her flat, fluffy, squeaky bunny and bear for tug-o-war or when I chase her around the house "trying to catch her" and get toy. She is put off by any toy that is loud or sound is abrasive. But Piper has to initiate the play, I can't get her interested or enthused otherwise. However, what Piper does love is going for walks, rides in the car, and shopping. I'm sure with your concern, love, patience and by observing your girls, they'll let you know what excites them---and then Annie-bar-the-door, you'll be expected to come through for them on demand!! And who can ignore the total cuteness and intensity of a determined little Yorkie!! As I said, just by observing your little gals throughout the day and watching for reactions to different things, you'll have their number in no time. How fun to have TWO!! Below is Piper's reaction to my question of Why is it that she is the cutest thing ever in the universe? |
I just wanted to say congratulations to you for adopting these two sweet little yorkie girls. 😀You will surely enjoy more love and kisses of appreciation than you can imagine. It may take some time as others have shared already but thier little personalities will soon start showing. They will feel safe and loved and know they have a place with you and love will help to overcome any issues. You also have come to a good place where so many have good advice and ideas to help you. Looking forward to hearing about all the exciting times you and the girls will enjoy!!!😀 |
We adopted a one year old and he had no idea what toys were. Based on his behavior, we suspect he was physically abused. I just kept them out and available for him. He finally, after about a month, got interested in the toys I hide food in. He only got interested in the others when we babysat another dog and that dog engaged Mario with the other toys. Now he plays with a variety. |
Congrats on your two new adoptions :)! Give the play thing some time yet; and remember, not all dogs play a whole lot...some don't really like to play, but may *love* to go for walks or whatnot. |
I adopted a yorkie (Brandi...RIP)and she was extremely skittish when I first brought her home. As soon as she saw my cat she rolled over on her back in a submissive position. It was the most heartbreaking thing I've ever seen. She stuck to me like white on rice because she was so scared. In fact she was so scared, she was afraid to fall asleep. Fast forward a few months, and the little skittish yorkie had turned into a bona fide diva with all of the accompanying attributes. She started to boss the cat around, she bossed me around. I will admit I indulged her every whim because she had such a rough life the first 7 years of her life. So I spoiled her like crazy. She never did learn how to play and I attribute that to her being used for breeding and kept in a crate most of the time. It was okay because I was able to find other things she enjoyed like walking and going to the dog park. But most of all her favorite thing in the world was to simply cuddle up with me. With lots of love and patience, she had transformed from a little skittish yorkie to a diva. |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk! Thank you for adopting these girls! Here is my story of a 9 year old Yorkie I took home with me in January. He loved me instantly. He was very quiet and wanted to be touching me at all times. It can take a dog months to fully adjust to a new home. Teek needed a new name as he refused to answer to his old one when I brought him home. I named him Teek (an Ewok name) and he loved his new name and started coming around. It took 5-6 weeks for him to play with a toy even once with me. He loves to play tug of war and other games with me. You will see their personalities emerge over the next several weeks, maybe even months. Love them. Be patient with with and you will soon have dogs that are adoring and loving to you. Good luck! Keep us posted on how they are doing and post pics. |
Not Playing Don't worry too much, it might take them a little time to get used to you, and thier new home. All my Yorkies have been older when I got them, and once together for a short time, they are always by my side and they follow me every where I go, just give them alot of cuddles and love and talk to them alot. As far as playing goes, none of them were that keen of playing with anything, I've tried many different toys, strangly enough the best thing that Chloe likes is a rolled up sock. Abby still dosen't like toys, but she loves to root around and play with her bath towel or just a fuzzy blanket. But they really just love going for walks. Maybe this comes from thier original owners not playing with them when they were puppies, it's hard to imagine not wanting to play with your new puppy, isn't it. Didi who has gone to Heaven, never liked to play with toys or a ball, she was scared if you through it and would run away. But she also loved going for a walk. Just keep trying different things. Believe me your Yorkies will be the best little loves of your life, they are so special. |
Congratulations on the new additions to your family! Quote:
As others have commented, be patient, talk to them as you go about your routine, and give them lots of loving. Try doing "tricks for treats" -- having them perform basic commands like sit, stay, down, shake hands, etc for a little food reward. My boys enjoy performing. |
