Big Debate Going On Here! 4 Attachment(s) My husband, stepdaughter, and myself have been in a debate about silkys and yorkies. They are saying that they are the same because they look alike, I told them that even though they look alike they are different. They are also saying that Prince is a silky. On his papers he is registered as a blue and tan yorkie. They are saying that he is a silky because he looks like one and because the snout or muzzle is longer and the coat is different and they are bigger than yorkies. He is 6 months old and weighs 9 pounds. So I am attaching a few pictures (some I have posted before) for you guys to give me your thoughts on what you think he is so maybe I can clarify this at home. Also the first two pictures are of his mother and father, mom is the blonde one. HELP! |
A couple more pics 4 Attachment(s) Here a couple more! |
He looks all yorkie to me. My male is 9 lbs too. |
TWO Different breeds and your baby looks YORKIE to me...HONEST - He looks like a yorkie not a Silky. If they were to see a real Silky & Yorkie side by side you can really tell the difference .... |
Well, you should ask them that if they think a Silky and a Yorkie are the same thing, then why are they calling him a "Silky"? ;) . Yorkies were originally bred to be around 14 pounds. This thread will result with a lot of YTers telling you how big their purebred Yorkies are. Your boy is adorable! A lot of them don't have the coats that are long and perfect looking and never will not matter what you do. There are things to improve the coat such as good food, shampoo, vitamins and so forth. Also, never brush your Yorkie dry. Spritz on water or leave-in conditioner for dogs. You do have a big boy there, but I'm sure you won't have to worry so much about all the things you do when they are tiny. Enjoy your YORKIE....that's my vote! :D |
Your baby is defintiely a Yorkie...not a silky...to the discrininating eye, it is fairly easy to ascertain the difference. I can see why some peope would have trouble with the distinction. The silky is a cross between the yorkie and the australian terrier. :) |
I think he looks like a yorkie too:) The long snout doesnt mean hes a silky at all because,ok..Yorkies are supposed to have the shorter snout and of course weigh 7lbs,but there are LOTS of yorkies out there that are over 7lbs and have long snouts and that doesnt make them any less yorkies at all,it just means they dont meet the standard. My two are waaaaaaaay off the standard! lol,but they are 100% yorkies and I love them to peices even though they arent standard "perfect".Firstly, both of mine have a coat that doesnt grow AT ALL,its stayed at 3 inches long (even though the texture is wonderful).Secondly,Jess has a looooong snout too.Lady (who is 2 years old) weighs a whopping 2lbs...and last but not least, they are very long bodied and their backs arent dead straight at all. If I had to go by what the books say on how a yorkie "should" be in order to meet the standard and be "perfect",then I think that I have a couple of mutts! lol. There is a rule of thumb on how they are supposed to look, but it wouldent be fun if they all looked the same now would it? (same weight, same colour, same size etc);) Lets just say that our babies are little rebels with personality!:D |
your baby is ALL ! yorkie he looks alot like brownie ! |
Did you by chance watch the dog show last night? Even in the toy breed category, there is a Silky and a Yorkie. So obviously, they're two different breeds or the AKC wouldn't deem them as two different breeds. But if you're baby is registered a yorkie, chances are most likely, he's a Yorkie! lol He looks Yorkie to me. :) |
Yorkie!! |

Yes I did watch the dog show and I even pointed that out that if they were the same then why would they have a yorkie and a silky showing? They are just bull headed and dont like to be wrong. LOL |
Thanks Thanks you guys, I knew I was right! He just doesn't like to be wrong at anything  But hes a man so... And sorry to the men on here, Yes us women can be like that too. LOL ;) |

Silky or Yorkie Last night on the dog show when the Silky came out they did explain that the Silky breed was made by breeding the Yorkie Terrier and the Australian Terrier. So that is why the Silky looks like the Yorkie not the other way around. Also, depending were you got your dog we all know story's about the Pet Stores dogs and puppymills. Well, here's my latest one I heard. I met this girl another Yorkie owner, she saw I have a Yorkie and a Maltese and said " Oh, you have Maltese my friend went to buy one at the pet store were I got my Yorkie, when it got bigger it turned out be a Bichon with papers and reg. as a Maltese" :thumbdown |
 He looks Yorkie to me. |
