Need some quick help please I think Joni stepped on an ant or maybe something worse on our walk. She suddenly sat down and started flicking her hind foot then trying to lick and chew it. Got her home and examined it for briar or stinger - nothing. Applied cold wet washcloth then submersed her foot in cold water. It seems to be letting up now - she wants to play ball. But what should I watch for? Should I give her Benadryl? She's 5.5#. Tks!! |
Within a couple of weeks of bringing Piper home, something "got" her when I let her outside before going to work (@10:30pm). She jumped, licked, bit, and limped inside--not putting back leg down at all. To make matters worse, she started trembling. I couldn't see anything at all on her foot or leg. I was a wreck, kept watching her and every so often offered bite of chicken...Pretty soon the shaking subsided, she perked-up and when she accepted chicken, I knew we'd both be ok! Because of the hour I never found anything in backyard and think maybe she was bit by an ant or something...I think because she was still getting used to everything, she took the hurt pretty personally. It's always scary when anything untoward happens to our babies, but keeping a close watch as you're doing is excellent--and the fact that Joni wants to play is also excellent. I'm sure others will be able to offer you concrete advice and suggestions...I'm only able to offer a bit of reassurance that a similar experience quickly returned to 'normal' in Piper's case. |
Hornet, wasps and yellow jacket bees make nest in ground, keep an eye out for them on the ground. Also Red ants bite, just in case you should have them in your area. |
How is she today? In suspecting a possible sting, I'd never hesitate to just go ahead and give the Benadryl - it's such a benign/safe med to give and to err on the side of caution never hurts. |
Antbite Joni's fine today. And she was comfortable by bedtime last night (Tks for asking!) We repeated the cold water foot soak a couple of more times then soaked a cotton ball in bactine and went all over her foot with it. She didn't lick or chew her foot anymore after that so not sure if it was the soak or bactine that did the trick. Did not use any Benadryl. The conflicting reports I read on Benadryl spooked me so I was glad I didn't feel it necessary to use. I wish I had titled this "antbite" since just "ant" is too short to retrieve results. So am adding this in case anyone else needs a quick search in the future! Searching for "ant bite" gets you tons of just "bite" results. :D |
