Chocolate Yorkies
 
Hello, I am a new member and I have 2 furbabies Lili 4 and Luigi 3. Previously I also had another yorkie who very sadly died at the age of only 7 of acute pancreatitis.

My yorkies are the standard brown, black, tan with some grey.

My question(s) can anyone tell me where to obtain information on chocolate yorkies and health issues that may affect them.

Hi as far as I know chocolate yorkies have the same health problems that yorkies have. If you do a search on here Im certain there have been threads on chocolate yorkikes on here.

I know a breeder that has one for sale. I just don't know a lot about them. From what I am learning it looks like it is something I should pass on.

I have a chocolate colored Yorkshire Terrier who is almost 4 years old . He is beautiful , very healthy , he just as good as any other Yorkie no matter what color it or size it is .. If I had it to do over I would choose him every time ..

I was under the impression the chocolate color is just a defect as far as color goes, not that it made them any different or susceptible to health problems. Is that correct or am I mistaken? Just don't let the breeder charge you more or act like its some designer strain of Yorkie.

Totally agree. It's more to do with the breeder and how ethical they are. A "breeder" who charges $$$ for any pup with whatever trendy name without anything else to back it up would definitely raise a big red flag for me.

Don't got to the breeder who tries to sell rare "Chcolate" Yorkies for an outrageous price. Its not a standard trait so shouldn't try to market it as such. Now a breeder who is selling one for a fair price maybe. But if it was born chocolate. Good breeders won't breed Yorkies to create a chocolate color...Because its not the desired trait.

I have a chocolate and he is amazing. He is so loving and sweet. I know it is frowned upon but I sought out my parti and my chocolate yorkie. They are both akc and I didn't pay outrageous prices. They were not advertised as rare and exotic. I did my research on yorkies and I found the off color ones to be the ones that I wanted. I've read a lot of threads about how not breeding to standard is bad and unethical so I don't want to upset anyone. This is just my opinion.

I would not pay extra for a chocolate, but if I was looking at a litter and one was chocolate or other color I would consider it. I am looking for Yorkies as pets only so I would not be trying to get an exotic color to breed.

My 2nd puppy I got. He was a bit of an odd color compared to the others and that is what I liked most about him. If they are trying to sell it to you as "rare and exotic" and charge you a lot extra I would pass. If it is a comparable price to the others in the litter and you like it then go for it!

Yup. Theres nothing wrong with buying one because you like the color. For a fair price. But its the breeders who try to sell them for more or keep them and breed them as rare. Stay away from those greeders. Your suppose to better the breed not breed outta standard and call it rare:confused:
