Nexgard Chewable Hello. This is my first post. I have only been a reader thus far. I have a 5 pound Yorkie. We just moved to a new area (south GA) and have a new vet. Not thrilled so far. Will probably be changing very soon However..... I have always used a topical flea and tick treatment on my girl that is made for her size. The vet wants me to use Nexgard Chewable every 30 days. I haven't been able to get myself to give it to her. It scares me half to death and I guess I feel like I would be feeding her insecticide. So please....let me know if any of you have used it and what your experience has been. Thank you in advance. |
Guess it's not my first post. LOL But so long ago I forgot. |
I Know nothing about Nextguard. I have my Teasel on Trifexis (sp?) before that Comfortis. Been happy with both but find them expensive. With fleas here in NC being so bad and Teasell Flea allergic. I do recommend you to use something |

Right now, she doesn't go outside because she is also allergic to fleas and....I nearly flipped out when I found a tick on her. She had never had a tick. We were in CA and it's a LOT different here in GA. I am just trying to decide on either the topical or the chewable and hopefully someone here would know. Thanks for your input. I'm appreciative. |
Well, with dogged (:)) determination I continued my search for answers. I have decided not to give it to her. Though it is a new product to me, it is a familiar product to many others. This story convinced me to not use this product: We recently went through a similar situation but with NEXGARD. July 17, 2015 @ 2:04 am is when we received the call from the vet at University of Wisconsin-Madison Animal Hospital, that the love of our lives, Gretchen, lost the battle for her little life. She was a Miniature Dachshund. 4 months, to the day, that we gave her the first dose of Nexgard. Our beautifully healthy dog started with vomiting which ...led to horrific, chronic diarrhea. The diarrhea was stripping albumin ( protein) from her body as well as ionized calcium. The complications thereafter were dreadful. For nearly the next 2 months we made weekly/biweekly trips to Madison ( 2 hours away) for treatment. Her intestines were shot. Lymphangiectasia, is what the autopsy reported. Among other meds, she was on, a daily steroid shot which wiped away her immune system. She developed Sepsis and just couldn’t fight it. Our pain is unbearable – knowing that we gave this horrible chewable to her…not once, but twice. Our vet insisted it was safe and not the cause of her vomiting and diarrhea…..he changed his attitude when he received her medical records from the hospital in Madison and has filed a complaint with Nexgard. Naturally, they ” feel bad” about what happened to Grettie, but see no correlation. We are submitting our form to the FDA. Word needs to get out in the public realm that these ” side effects” are real and much more common. This family of drugs, that make up NEXGARD and BRAVECTO needs more public awareness. There are no "coincidences". Susan is right, we need to unite on this matter and not let our most beloved family members have died in vain. Thank you again, teasel, for your response. |
Honestly you can find stories about EVERY drug out there similar to the one posted above. If you use a topical, you're still putting the chemicals into their bloodstream -- it's the same exact thing essentially. That 4 month old dog could've died from anything, it could've been a fluke that he just happened to take the medicine before he passed away. Or maybe he did pass away from the drug, but even so, unfortunately these are risks vs. rewards we have to choose. I use Nexgard because Jackson swims a lot, for one, and it's a total PITA to try and coordinate a day when I know he won't be in the water (or the day after) to put the topicals on him. I also hated the greasiness of it on his back and petting him afterward and having to avoid that area. We also have a puppy in the house now (my moms dog) who bites and wrestles with him a lot and I wasn't entirely comfortable having her so easily exposed to licking it, biting it, etc. Anyway we've done 4 doses of Nexgard and I will continue using it (I only use it in the summer months though so probably do one more dose in Sept and then stop it), no side effects what so ever. It's made from the makers of Frontline. It's also been thoroughly tested and I trust it. EVERY drug has a potential for side effects. There are certain ones however I choose to stay away from (i.e. I don't like Trifexis and wouldn't trust it at all). |
Brister Thank you so much for your response. Just what I was looking for. I do know that bad things can be found about all drugs. I just am leery of the newer ones and needed to hear from someone that has used it with positive results. All I could find online was line were ones like the one I quoted above. Too scary to consider without any positive reports. Thanks again. |
I have always used Frontline plus on any furbaby I have had. However I had a coupon for a free nexguard. My vet (whom i adore) said that is what she uses on her babes. So I gave it to Spice ,it has been 18 days and so far no side effects at all. however due to the price and my budget I will have to stick with Frontline Plus as Nexguard is more expensive. |

Thank you for your response. I still haven't been able to give it to her. I am so scared something will happen to her. She is 10 and weighs five and a half pounds. When I first got her she weighed four pounds. How much does yours weigh and what age? |
Hi! I totally understand being nervous about giving a new med, and it's really good to research and ask questions :) I am giving my boys NexGard (I've given it 3 times so far), and they've had no side effects at all so far. Chase is 6 and 11-12 lbs and Calvin is 5 and 6 lbs. |

I have mac on nexgard he is 5 lbs 2 yrs old I love it. Easier than frontilne to give |
I love nexguard. Both my yorkie and my moms take it. No matter what you use whether its a topical, a collar or a pill it goes into the blood stream. I have not had any issues with it and my vets office has said they have not had any either. Topicals just didn't work for us they made my yorkie sick and then they would be greasy until they got a bath. |
Thank you so much. I am feeling much better about it all now as she is just fine. I had been reading about another oral called Bravecto that is having terrible results (sick and dying dogs) and it scared me so bad it was difficult to make the decision for this oral med, which is why I posted my query. There is a page in Facebook called Does Bravecto Kill Dogs? Thanks again for the responses. They helped me work up enough nerve to give the Nexgard. I'm appreciative. |
"If it aint broke, dont 'fix' it." Your baby has been on a topical med for fleas and ticks, and I am guessing it was effective and she was tolerating it....so why change? Just tell the vet "No, I would rather continue with Brand X since it has worked well for all these years, and she tolerates it fine...but thank you for the option". |
