Hair Matting Season? Do Yorkies have hair matting seasons like other dogs have shedding seasons? Penny has suddenly started matting. She is terrified of groomers and hates wire brushes but I brush her everyday with a boars hair bristle brush. I have been cutting out every mat I feel but this is getting ridiculous. She seems to be biting at her legs a lot too. It just started when we returned from Florida. She is on Advantage Multi so no fleas. |
I'm not aware of a matting season and have not expreienced that w/ mine. Have you tried a buttercomb yet, those are awesome for mats. Is she biting at her legs or at her paws? If at her paws, she may have allergies here... |
Yorkies do not shed, so they don't have 'moulting' according to seasons, like double coated breeds. It might just be the change in weather, humidity, water or even diet. I would use a lot of conditioner after shampooing & rinse very well. It will help keep the hair smoother & tangle free for a few days. Have you tried a pin brush (w/out the little balls @ the end)? I sell the Madan pin brushes & it's great @ penetrating the hair to the skin & brush out tangles. The ends of the pins are beveled, so it will not scratch or hurt the skin like a slicker brush would. If you have any questions, I'll be happy to help if I can. |
I use a boar's hair brush for finishing. It isn't able to go down to the skin to take care of tangles. I first use a 6" comb and work from bottom to top. If there is a small tangle it is easily taken care of. I also do this every day and also redo his topknot. |

Tagging along with what Mimimomo (Jenny) and Dyan have written: to prevent mats and reduce tangling, start with a thoroughly combed out coat. Best to do this after a bath with plenty of conditioner. Only a comb with closely spaced teeth will find every little tangle. When finished, the comb should easily glide through the hair. Then I use a combo of the comb and brush throughout the week to keep my boys tangle free. Jenny has great Madan combs and pin brushes (comfy, as she wrote) on her site: toplinepet.com |
