Haircut - Whiskers Question Hi all! I sure hope this post is in the right spot :) I have a quick question - every time my Yorkie gets groomed, all her whiskers have been cut short - she gets a puppy cut. I don't really mind them being short, other than they poke me when I give her kisses LOL but I am wondering if this is normal? So tell me, any one else's baby have his/her whiskers cut along with their hair during a trim? Thanks! |
Good question for those who bring to groomers. I do all the grooming myself, and our Wylie is in a puppy cut...I guess I do end up trimming a few of his whiskers, but not all. |
Animals feel their surroundings w/whiskers...especially cats. Since dogs do not go out on their own in the dark, it should be ok. Unless they're going blind...they need those whiskers to 'feel' their surroundings. For Yorkies & other dog breeds that have a growing coat/hair, it's kind of difficult to get a short cut on the face/ muzzle area w/out cutting the whiskers. If the dog was losing his/her eye sight, I would leave the muzzle area longer, save those whiskers. Teddy has a lot more whiskers than Max. The whiskers seem to grow stiffer, usually when shorter. I've let Teddy's beard grow really long again and the whiskers have grown much softer. They are black in some parts and blond in others. |
Mine both have whiskers that are black at the tips and blond on the roots. I hate how the black parts stand out in their golden beards. Plus they don't lay down like the rest of the hair. I trim only the black parts off. Uni HATES when I do this. Toto does not mind. |

Very interesting! Thank you all for your input and experience in the whisker area. I think because she gets a close cut, her whiskers get cut along with the rest of her hair in the same area by default, but I've always wondered if there is a way to avoid it. Funny that some of your darlings have blonde and black whiskers! My little one does too, and I've always thought it was so funny (and weird) ;) Glad its not so uncommon! She also has one in particular that grows back curly. |
My groomer always trims the whiskers I think it would be very hard to groom them and not and dogs dont need whiskers like cats anyway so its no big deal |
Joni hates to have those whiskers trimmed. I think it must actually hurt for a sec when I clip them. I have to save her face for last when grooming because that's just all she wrote at that point - she's done! |
