Running teddy hasn't been allowed out front due to his escape missions. Lately he's been behaving and staying by me after catching the door when I leave to get something from the car or take out garbage. Today he decided to run which resulted in me falling. He is back inside safe but I'm not sure about my toes I can't move my foot. How can I encourage the stay and come command? He's learned how to get out now cuz our screen door doesn't shut properly |
Ouch, your poor foot! I trained my boys not to dart out the door and they were perfect for a couple years. Then Teddy decided to dart out and chase the UPS truck down the street. We decided to put up baby gates that keep the boys away from the doors. If you are opposed to this kind of containment, I would at least work on fixing or installing a new screen door that latches. Dog trainer Victoria Stilwell demonstrated on her show using a floormat near the door. Have your dog sit and stay on the mat. Takes lots of repetition with rewards when done correctly. Gradually increase the time of the stay and the distance at which you walk away. For come, practice indoors. Do not ask your dog to come only for things he may not be interested in. Ask him to come, reward with either a treat or praise, and then let him go on his way. If he gets out, do not chase. Usually standing still, crouching down or even sitting down and calling for him calmly is more likely to make him come to you. Keywords like "treat" or "car ride," whatever he likes will get his attention. When my Teddy darted out the door (dad was the door opener), I happened to be coming home at the same time. I knelt down in the road with my arms open and calmly called for Teddy to come. Granted, I had the benefit of Teddy being happy to see me return. Practice, practice, practice. |
Thank you! I rarely ever chase him until he's going into our evil neighbors yard or into the street I'll sit in the grass and say teddy come get a cookie but he darted past me while I stood and I tried to grab him but I tumbled over now I'm scared I won't get to band tomorrow after our little incident! Usually if I go recycle he will come with me and I say stay you want a cookie come on and he will today he tested me... |
I don't know how to help you with the running because these terriers like to terrorize. However, a trick I learned after Barney escaped was to teach him to love a whistle. I bought a ref whistle at WalMart and I have trained all 3 of mine that when I blow it, I give cheese. So, in my fenced in back yard, I practice this whistle/cheese thing so that they know they are going to get treated if they run to the whistle. I keep the whistle on a desk by my front door. This way if the booger escapes again, I have a way to get him back quickly. |
