Exercise for young Yorkie Hi everyone, my nine month old female Yorkie [despite the fact she's afraid of traffic and we are working hard on desensitization and counterconditioning] loves to go for walks and runs in the car- free and often people-free greenbelt area right behind my house. I'm wondering how much exercise other people give their Yorkies that are around the same age. She weighs 5.4 pounds. She is never panting, never seems tired afterwards - she just love those outings. Right now, we have been doing a walk with some off leash romping about morning, noon and evening and she still has energy despair when she gets in. She's just so keen! So how much - or how long - do you all walk your Yorkie? Thanks all! |
I usually go for about 20min walks, but we've done 45mins walks before too, with no problem; we even used to take Wylie running w/ us and he loved it. We also play fetch w/ them and that's hard running. |
My little girl is six. In the evenings or early morning because of heat, we have been going on 2.5-3 mile walks every day, sometimes twice a day. When the weather is cooler, we've gone as much as five miles at a time. Katie loves her walks and also will run endlessly playing fetch. As long as you build up the exercise gradually she should be fine. Her growth plates have most likely have closed by now, so I would think it's okay, but you can ask your vet. My last Yorkie and I walked at least a couple of miles a day, weather permitting, up until two days before she passed away close to her seventeenth birthday. Her heart, lungs, and leg were very strong. |

Very useful information and thank you so much for this. With my past bigger herding dogs I always worried about those growth plates closing and I've done my research but I concur with you and thank you again. Yo should like a true Yorkie fan! Kind regards, Kat... and Tessa! |
