Help 😢 I don't know where to post this but my Binxie has taken to growling and bearing his teeth at my hand if I rub or scratch my own leg or anywhere on myself. He's nipped at my hand a few times before. I have no idea what's going on or why he's doing this. He's never been hit or hurt by anyone. What do I do? I'm terribly in distress over this.😧 |
Timeout! Does he have a cage? Teddy growls or attempts to bite visitors who's he's accepted into the house occasionally so I give him a stern no and isolate him by either putting him outside or in a cage |
Yes he has a kennel. I have a little bed his food bowl and a water bottle in there. So if he wants to be left alone he goes in there. How long should he be in there when he's in timeout, and why would he do this? He's 9 months old and isn't fixed as I'm planning on breeding him with a female when I get one. |
Have you done any obedience training? If not it's time to start. You may want to take him to the vet just incase, something as simple as an ear ache can make a dog suddenly grumpy. |
I'd say he's doing it to be the leader of his pack...are there any other pets? I leave teddy for about 5-10 mins per timeout. Maybe you guys need some bonding time with treats and his favorite toys don't let have it till he sits and waits to know you are boss and they are your toys |
No there's no other pets yet. He's not a treat dog. But we do play together all the time. I have will try the making him wait like you're suggesting. I'll use outside in place of treats or a new inexpensive new toy. Or his favorite bacon or sausage from breakfast. |

You need to act WHILE he is in the act of doing the behavior. Have a can filled w/ either nails or pennies and when he growls/bares teeth - shake the can hard to startle him out of his behavior and say a firm "No" at the same time. If that doesn't work, buy a Bark Genie on Amazon and use that in conjunction with "no" when the behavior occurs. I would also enroll in a basic obedience class, that would be excellent for you both. |

I'm kind of with Wylie's Mom. I don't crate, but not sure you want the crate to be a punishment- he may not relate why he has been put in the crate - instant correction is the best along with consistency. I could not say it if has anything to do with not bein neutered or not - don't have that kind of knowledge. Do know that obedience classes are always good if done positively! Good luck! |
Don't use a crate for punishment. It's supposed to be a safe place they can go when they're over stimulated, or just want to be left alone. My dog is from a backyard breeder, and was also put in a cage for punishment, and it's done damage that I still haven't been able to correct (over a 4 year span). Reinforcement. Ignore the bad, praise like hell the good. Lots of treats. The Yorkie breed is all about consistency and repetition. Once you get a routine and training plan, stick with it. |
Tell him NO and BAD BOY in a firm, low voice. He will stop. You have to control the behavior and train him just like you do for potty training, barking, furniture access, etc. This is no different and is no reflection on you as the owner or him as the puppy. It's natural and will abate with correction and time. I would say if you are consistent the issue would be resolved in a matter of hours. |

19 days till we get her. The breeder calls her Bella so think I'll keep that name due to she's used to the name. So I'll have Binxie and Bella . I can't wait. |
