Walking Yorkies I try to walk three miles a day. When it is warmer, I will take Sadie and carry her half the way, and walk her half the way, off and on. I had a front pack that she fits in. She weighs 5-1/2 lbs. Do any of you walk your Yorkie(s) for long distances? I tend to not walk her long distances as her little legs move so much faster than mine, which means she is taking many more steps to my one. Just thought I would ask. Kate |
Kate....in the summer we walk Zoe anywheres from 3 to 6 miles aday and Zoe loves it...if it is warm out we bring water for her to have...she normally weighs about 6.5 pounds right now she is almost 9 because she had puppies in Sept. so we could not walk her and then it got really cold here (we live in Wisc.) so she has put on a few pounds. We can't wait for the weather to get warmer so we can start the walks again...she sure does miss them! |
We usually walk the girls about 1/2 a mile to a 1 mile when we go for a walk...sometimes they will make the whole way and sometimes they tire out!! But they love to go, and when it is warm we try and go everyday.... |
Right now we dont take walks because its too cold. But in the warmer months we walk by a Canal and that is a mile or so walk. We also walk around in a park by our house. |
Mine don't walk real long distances either but I usually take the stroller and let them ride in that when tney get tired. It works gret cuz then i can still get my exercise! |
Shelby used to ride most of the way (I walk 4 miles) in the front pack. Now that she is bigger I let her walk/ride. I keep wondering the same thing though. Not sure how far is too far to walk. She loves walking but seems like 4 miles might be too much for her little legs??? Does anyone know what is too much? |
All dogs are different in how much walking they can do all at once. Bella hates walking anywhere and will maybe walk 1 lap around the park (10 min walk) and then sit down and refuse to walk anymore but she loves going in her bag for walks. On the other hand Ruby absolutely loves her walks and could go for miles. If you know your going for a long walk and your bringing your Yorkie for the first time, just bring a dog carrier just incase it's to much for your Yorkie. But if you have taken your Yorkie on long walks and they seem to handle it fine and enjoy it, don't worry about the distance because it's good for them to get the exercise. :) |
My 6,5 lb-er loves long walks as well. She's actually liked it from the moment we got her (at 14 weeks). Just tonight we took her for an hour walk (got to take advantage of the 40F days which we don't get much of here in WI winters). Trixie gets really bored and hyper when we don't take her for long walks. I guess I just watch her and if she keeps going, I keep going. If she slows down a little or keeps looking at me, I'll go back or carry her. |
Chewy loves going for walks...we just tool around together and run errands. He usually takes a rest when we get home. When the weather is cold like it is right now, we tend to stay indoors  |
I'm a walker too! :D Princess can't walk as far as I can, so I got her a stroller. I'm in training all the time for the Avon 3 Day Walk. So I really needed to get her one so she can walk with me. We both love it! :D :D :D :D |
When I was living in South Korea, I would walk my baby about 3 times a week for 5 miles, we would go up an 800 elevation ft hill/mountain. She LOVED it and could beat me to the top if I hadn't had her on a leash. It is really funny cause now when I walk her here at home, on flat street surface she will only go for about 1 1/2 mile and then sit down. Like stated above - all dogs are different in their walking wants. |
My 5-month old pup doesn't go for walks. He goes for runs. I have had him out on a leash for 20 minutes or more at times, and he just runs circles around me the whole time. I would absolutely love to let him loose and just let him go. He would have the time of his life ---but I can't do that! Carol Jean |
We have a farm where we go on weekends. I love to walk and since it is warm here most of the year we are able to walk most times. Total it is about 5 miles. We have "rest stop" spots. My yorkies will walk/run the hole time, but come to a halt at those spots. We rest, have water and when the bunch gets "antsy" start off again! Even the 15 wk olds participate. I was worried, but they seem to set the pace. When one gets tired the group seem to know and slow down until the other catches up. It wears out the dogs and they get the extra exercise they lack in town. Its amazing how long they can run/walk. So far they are still raring to go when I am done. If they do get tired, we just sit for awhile and start again. Its great fun, good exercise and the dogs learn to watch me for signals of where we are going. |
