Stranger fear Lacey was a Mill rescue, when we got her she was begging for attention from anyone who would give it to her. She was soo weak and so frail from malnutrition and pneumonia, but always mustered a kiss. Well its been 6 weeks.. you can't see her ribs anymore, her coat is shiny, she has a super sweet disposition, and she is strong enough to jump on the bed So I started taking her out.. we went to the pet store and she was shaking with fear when the cashier tried to pet her. Not sure if I should be happy or concerned :confused: |
I'm happy to hear that Lacey is doing so well! The fear of strangers might be a fear of losing her new home and family. We brought Teddy home from his breeder when he was 8 months old. He was very well-trained and adjusted, but soon developed what I believe was a fear of being taken away from his new home. People would run up to him, often exclaiming with excitement, and try to pick him up. Keep taking her out to meet people, or at least be around other people. Maybe try to direct people to let Lacey sniff their hands first, meet them on her own terms. Praise and reward her for positive behavior. To be honest, it took a fairly long time for Teddy to be convinced that he was with us permanently. The more I took him out, the more he was reassured that he was always coming home with us. |
Welcome to YT and thank you for rescuing this sweet little girl and getting her healthy. It could have been the smells of the pet shop, smells of other dogs and animals, she could have feared she was going back to the mill. At one time I had a pack of 3, all purchased as 8 week old puppies, the first time I took them into a Pet Smart shop ( they were 2, 5. & 8 yo) you would have thought they had just walked into the vets office,they were all shaking and trying to climb out of the shopping cart, so out of the store I went. I waited over a year to try it again, same reaction, they were terrified, I think it was all the diff,. smells, they were all very dog friendly so I know it was not the smell of other dogs. Try taking her to a Lowes or Home Depot, any store that allows dogs, or you can walk her through town, see what her reaction is. |
It's just too early for her to feel totally safe yet, would be my guess. Just keep trying with her, keep the outings short and easy...with lots of reassurance and TLC. She will get there... |
It's been a year and Piper is still somewhat hesitant with strangers, but ever so much better than before. Depending on situation, I'll let her approach people, but most often I pick her up and kinda of turn her so people pet her back; that seems to help. Small steps and patience is the key. I agree that taking her places and not forcing anything is the way to acclimate and calm your precious baby. |
thanks everyone. I took Lacey to a friend's for a brief visit. She did not act scared at all. I think I was expecting too much, too soon because she is doing so well! I just have to be patient . She is def attached to our family..so glad she feels safe here! |
