Touchy about Yorkie's Weight Is it just me or are people (I mean outside this group), touchy about a yorkie's weight. People with smaller yorkies always tell me my 6,5lb-er looks bigger than a standard yorkie. And then today I met somebody with a yorkie that was about twice as big as Trixie and she was talking to me about how she hated that yorkies were bred as small as mine  What is up with that? |
People are NUTS, Go with the flow!! WHatever they say just say YES, I agree and then turn and run!! |

I am not sure if it's a fetish towards smaller dogs in general or that many people truly emphasize towards the size of Yorkies. But, yes size does seem to be a top subject in conversation regarding Yorkies. Why this is I am not sure?? |
That happens to me every time, infact yesterday I had that happen to me. What people have to say I really don't give a hay stack about. I am proud of my girl and I love her just the way she is. She is just the perfect size in my eyes. |
Teacup :-) People always ask me, "How cute, is she a teacup?" They ask me this b/c she's still a puppy, so she's small (well, 5.4lbs now at 4 months!). Anyway, I don't feel like explaining the whole T-cup story in the pet store so I say, "no, a standard Yorkie. She should be around 7lbs." Sometimes they say, "oh" like they're sorry I got such a 'big' Yorkie! LOL I think nowadays when uneducated people think "Yorkie," they assosiate it with T-cup. It's a shame, but it's true. |
I don't care what anyone thinks of Teddy. He is a big little guy weighing in at around 10 pounds. When someone says he is big I just say "yep, he sure is and I love every ounce of him" :D |
I was going to write EXACTLY what Karen wrote -- people are CRAZY. I have a supermodel Yorkie w/ longer than "normal" legs. He's perfect to me and he's 8.5lbs. If someone makes a deragatory comment about his size and their Yorkie is small or tiny I usually say something catty about their "hamster" or "guinea pig". No offense to those w/ tinies, but I sometimes feel like giving a good taste of their own medicine so they can see how it feels. |
People can be rude. My three are all different weights. Maddie is my big girl around 10lbs, Rudy is around 7lbs and Polly is less than 3lbs. When I take all three out people all ways ask if Polly is there baby. I just tell then yorkies come in all different sizes just like people. When I just had Maddie I was at Petmart and this man was so rude about Maddie being bigger, he realy pissed me off till I realized he was senile ball head old man. ha! |
YES! When Brandy was about 3 months old some lady in Petsmart was asking me questions about her. Then she said, "Wow, isn't she kind of BIG for a yorkie?" I was like "She's only 2 lbs!!" I couldn't believe the nerve. I told her that she'll end up being WITHIN the standard of around 5 lbs or so. I just don't like how people are acting like smaller is better!!! Sorry, but personally I wouldn't want such a breakable dog. But big, small, what does it matter as long as the owner is happy with their dog? |
I agree yorkies come in all different sizes. But one thing they all have in common is that there the best babies around. What great personalities they all have. |
Just explain to these people that Yorkie's come in many different sizes. We all know they do -- might as well let everyone else in on it! Carol Jean |
I just have to remind myself that they are the uneducated ones, and try not to get too pissed off. I have people question the breed of my dog all the time, and I just have to tell them that Yorkies, like any other thing in life, come in all different sizes. I honestly dont think *most* people realize that when they question the size of our dogs, that we take it personal. I just really dislike how every time I come across another Yorkie owner, they always ask me her weight, like that defines our dogs. |
I LOVE All Sized yorkies - what I DO have a problem with is breeding tinies or someone not experienced looking for the absolute smallest yorkie they can find...Yorkies are such a small breed to begin with.... HAVING a tiny or a larger size yorkie is A-OK with me - I really don't pay attention to anyones yorkie size because I just think they're all precious - big AND small.... |
People make all kinds of comments based on common lack of knowledge. Yorkies caome in all weight ranges from little ones to big ones. We love them all regardless- just like ytou love your children. I have one who is 6'4 all most 6' 5 at 16 and a daughter who is 5'4. The standard according to our breed states 7 pounds and under. This is like looking at the schedule your doctor has which states a male/female a certain age/body build and height should weigh this amount. Some of us will fit that measurement others will not. Fact of life nothing more- it does not make us worth any more or less as a individual. The same for our yorkies- they are all still yorkies and the loves of our life. |
I think people are touchy about weight because their is a big weight difference in yorkies. I think thier is more a tendency though for people to like them smaller. When we are walking Chachi and Jewels, Jewels my 6 lb yorkie tends to get more attention than Chachi My 9 lb yorkie. Whenever people make comments I just smile and be polite anymore. I realize Non yorkie people and even some yorkie people that dont belong to a forum like this one really dont know alot about yorkies. |
Maybe a good comeback would be Aren't you kinda FAT for a human? .....or skinny or tall or better yet Geez, you must the the ugliest human I have ever seen. Rude people don't get explainations from me. If someone is genuinely interested and wants to learn then I will talk all day long and try to educate them. Sometimes what we preceive as a rude comment is really ignorance. |
More often that a size/weight question, we are often asked what breed of dog Toto is!! It always surprises us .... we think she looks like a Yorkie!! ;) |
Bettyanne - she's ALL YORKIE no doubt about it... and pretty as a picture - It's funny how it's usually someone totally clueless that makes any comments.... |

Well said. That is exactly how I feel. I know with selling my little ones people are like well I want under 5lbs, 7lbs is just to big. I have to remind them to look at the body structure, the bones, because that can make the biggest difference in weight to size ratio. My Father-in-law has 5 yorkies and they are all FAT, they feed them hotdogs daily, chicken bones, and crap dog food. He tells me often that he has normal yorkies and he thinks everyone else starves theirs to make them under 7lbs. I always hold my tongue and smile, while I laugh at him in silence. |
People are clueless. It's like having a child. I'd rather have a child that's healthy, than worry about their size. I think it's funny that some say Trixie is big and others say Trixie is small. But they all say she's cute :D |
yes, people are OVERLY sensitive about it! Everyone just has their own opinions and ideas of what size the Yorkie is supposed to be. |
