Breeding question Hi - I have just joined YT and want to ask a question. We have a little black and tan Yorkie female and we want to breed her. We have found a wonderful breeder that will provide stud service, but her sire is black and gold, with very LITTLE black. He is very, very light. We prefer the Yorkies with more black on the body. So if we breed them, what color will their pups be as adults? |
Genetics in regards to phenotype(physical characteristics) is a toss up in humans let alone in dogs. If you want a Black/Tan your best bet would be to find a Black/Tan male who has those colors dominate in his bloodline. If you choose to breed her with a black/gold you could recieve a mix of adult colors in the litter, all black/tan, or all black/gold. Whichever is dominate within the lines which are reproducing. The only place where I know there are predominately black/tan yorkies is Brasil. |
I'd highly recommended that you NOT breed your girl. There is so much that goes in to being a responsible breeder, just read some of the threads in the breeder section here and you will learn a wealth of information on the subject. Your "wonderful breeder" can't be that great if she studs out her dogs to just anyone. Great breeders do their research and know their breeding stock. They know the dogs' health and lineage lines going way, WAY back. Proper breeders don't make money on breeding. They work to improve the breed. They are prepared for the worst outcomes of breeding, which includes emergency c-sections or even death of pups and or mom. There is a LOT more to consider before breeding then just worrying what color the pups will end up. Save your baby and enjoy her as a pet. Please don't breed her. |
