Again thank you for the replies. Today has been the most trying so far. She is biting everyone and everything and growling all over the place. She even jumped out of my lap while I was sitting with her on the couch. I was worried that she might have hurt herself and called the vet. He had me check her pupils and gums which were fine and she is running all over the place. He told me what to keep an eye out for. She continued to run and bark and growl and bite. I finally had to put her in her crate to calm down and now everything is quiet so I am pretty sure she is napping. My parents were visiting the past few days and left today so I am hoping to get back on a quiet regular schedule. Maybe that will help. |
As a trainer recently explained to me, if your puppy were with littermates, her momma or even other dogs, she'd be kept in her place & would know her place. She is quite young & still developing. She's teething. Yet still, she must learn that you're the boss of the house. My dogs are small in size & they've been spoiled with a lot of carrying around. That's not always the best thing. Allowing a small dog to climb onto your shoulder or to lay across your feet is a sign of dominance. Even though she's just a baby & has growing "pains", you still must start her training now so that the little baby issues don't become very bad habits later on. Good luck. |
I just want to reemphasize that everything that you are describing, as far as behavior at 10 weeks of age, is perfectly NORMAL. I would not attribute any of the biting, growling or nipping to aggression issues or behavioral problems with this puppy. I am, however, concerned that you may be emotionally unequipped to understand puppy behavior (like most of us when we get a new puppy!) and so would encourage that you seek the assistance of a trainer so that you can confidently assert yourself through understanding dog language. Miscommunication between species leads to a lot of misunderstanding which can be cleared up through training for us and the dog. Hope you have a better day today! |
Yes I am looking for a puppy class and then obedience class. I understand that this behavior is normal and I know there was a lot of commotion in the house with visitors after only being home for a few days. I figured out that she was possibly over stimulated yesterday. I put her in her crate and she slept for awhile. I also put her down on the floor anytime that she started really biting me. She finally settled down and fell asleep on my lap. This morning she is less hyper and not biting me so far. The house is quieter and she is free to investigate the house and visit with the other dogs with my supervision of course. I hope to get more training in before the next wave of family visits. We have my step daughter and her family coming for a week. I hope I can get her in a good place before they come. I am also rereading the yorkie books I purchased. All I want is to be sure I do things right. Thanks Again! |
I think it may be time to try doing some energy work on my puppy and now that the house is less chaotic I will also do some animal communication with her. I am feeling less stressed now that the house is back to normal. Having visitors even the ones you love very much can put a strain on things. |
After having mostly big dogs (who even as puppies would never be allowed to growl) we had a hard time adjusting to what we call Ziva's " voice". I watched her and littermates interact and it was all quite noisy. My daughter was quite good at being her momma and growling/biting into her neck when she got carried away with herself. I found the Nothing in life is free (NILIF-google it) program mentioned here so helpful. Ziva is 6 and a wonderful vibrant vocal little dog but it took some time to get there! |
