Anal glands expressed at groomer I am using a new groomer tomorrow that expresses anal glands, I told her I don’t want her to do that. The two other groomers I had used didn’t do it. Cody shows no signs of needing glands expressed and if he did I would take him to his vet to do it. #1-I just do not feel comfortable letting a groomer do this. #2 if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, since he shows no signs I don’t need anyone messing around back there. I was just wondering how many of you let your groomer express your babies anal glands. Thanking you in advance for your input. |
My sister is a groomer. She was a vet tech for many years before she was able to be a full time groomer. She does that and she really does know what she is doing. I would feel comfortable with a groomer that does that because I have known groomers that did it and because they do this every day they know what they are doing with it. Just my opinion. I would not use a pet store groomer though myself, but if I did I would probably not have them do it as I am not sure how well they are trained, but a regular groomer I would probably let them. I let the pet store grind Teek's nails and that is all I use them for. I groom him myself and so far am doing a decent job at it. |
My Groomers do not do it, as I have told them not to. |
I do them myself if I see any signs of needing it (like scooting). But for any reason, I do want it done by someone else, I'd prefer the vet. |
If I take any of my dogs to a new groomer ( my regular groomer knows not to do it ) I specifically tell them Not to express anal glands . I feel this a medical procedure that needs to be done at a vets office . |
I agree with your #2: if your dog hasn't needed it, don't start. Max and Teddy do not need their glands expressed manually. |
None of my 4 have theirs expressed by us or anyone else, and they're doing great as is. Yup, ain't broke, don't fix it! |
Thank you all very much. As Oscar stated, I feel this a medical procedure that needs to be done at a vets office only. In all the years I had dogs groomed they never expressed anal glands, my Poodle was the only one that had issues and she went to the vet, my past 4 yorkies never have anal glad problem, they never had to be emptied. I just wanted to ensure I was making the right decision. Thank you all again. |
I only let my vets do it. |

My Yorkies have not needed it, but the first time we took Rowan to the vet Rowan got Jahryn with his anal glands in the car and the entire car smelled so bad! LOL The next time we put him in the car we got a couple miles down the road (he was in a crate) and we had to roll down the windows. He has not done that since then. |
