New Yorkie I just brought home a new Yorkie. I bought him from a reputable breeder who has been in business for forty years. The street she lives on is Yorkie Lane! She shows dogs, as well. Anyway, this boy is a retired champion. He is five years old and is not neutered. The reason they retired him is because he was shooting blanks. Anyway, we are all getting acquainted and he is a little nervous. I want to get him neutered because I know it will be better for his overall health. We just lost our other Yorkie, Milo. He was a great big boy at 20 Pds. This boy is 7 pounds and we are nervous of his small size. We loved our Milo with all our hearts and this new fella came to us rather quickly after his passing. It was an opportunity we couldn't pass up. Anyway, do any of you have experience neutering older dogs? Any thoughts would be appreciated. |
I believe he will be fine. As long as his pre checkup is good neutering is easy. Also if he is a leg lifter and not potty trained belly bands help. fwiw...Or if he marks I mean |
We had our older golden retriever fixed and he was fine....no problems. |
He lifts his leg at every opportunity. Lol! He's a sweetie and is sleep on his bed next to my bed. Thanks for the encouragement. I know it needs to be done. |
Thanks for the encouragement He is definitely a leg lifter and has been marking a lot in the house. I am glad that neutering at an older age is fine. We want what is best for him. He is resting comfortably in his little bed next to my side of the bed. This is our first night with him and he is pretty relaxed. Thanks for your feedback! |
Congratulations on your new little boy. I hope he brings you great happiness and that he also helps to heal your heart. Our little girl, Katie, was with her breeder for the first three years of her life and was retired from breeding after earning her championship and having two litters of pupp. Katie joined our family almost two years after we lost our little girl, Ashley, close to her seventeenth birthday. She has brightened our hearts and our home with so much love, and I hope your new little boy does the same. Katie was dearly loved before she joined our family, but she still adjusted so beautiful to her new life as a much adored, very very active princess. I'm deeply sorry for your loss of Milo. |
Cody is adopted, he was neutered as a puppy so no marking, when he pees he takes a kinda stance and pees,no leg lifting, but, what I have found out over the 20 months that I have him is, if he is near a fence, wall, tree, fire hydrant, anywhere a dog has previously peed up on, he will hike his leg to pee pee, soooo, I keep him away from these things. Neutering is for health, not necessarily to prevent marking. My brother had his 7 y/o Shih Tze neutered with no issues. Congratulations on your new fur baby. |
As long as his pre-surg bloodwork goes well, he should be just fine :). Just fyi though, neutering doesn't usually fix marking....you'll have to use training for that. Congrats on your new boy, would love to see pics! |
