Help Training our new 1 year Yorlie Juliette We did!! We are adopting Juliette next weekend. This is all new to me so need some help with adapting her to our schedule and want to get it right from the start. Right now is she housebroken and goes out every 4 hours. The foster mom recommended that I "crate" her for the first 10 days to get her on my schedule. Here are my questions 1. Is crating her the best way to train her? Even though I'm not crazy about that. She is used to it and the foster mom says she loves her "crate. It's home and comfort for her. 2. I have a summer schedule(not working) and Sept-June schedule. They are different. Should I get her my summer schedule now and adapt in Sept? Summer Schedule: AM walk: 5:45AM ,eat/7:00AM, 12:00pm, 4:30 Eat/walk, 7:00PM Sept-AM walk: AM 5:45AM ,eat/7:00AM, 2:30pm, 4:30 Eat/walk, 7:00PM (Is this even an ideal schedule) During the year I work two days a week and can't really let her out until 2:30 Can she hold out until then? I think at times I could come home to let her out but would be really tricky. Which schedule should I get her on? Can I just switch in Sept or should I get her on one schedule. Thanks in advance for your suggestions Danielle:) |
Hi Danielle and welcome to YT :)!!! And CONGRATS on your almost-home new baby! It sounds like you have done so very much to prepare for your new little one, and it's so great to see this. We need more people like you in the world who really do their research and prepare, it's awesome! I don't do crates bc all of mine just despise them, lol. But, some kiddos really do like them and use them as one of their little own spaces, so it really depends. If it were me doing this, I'd be leaving the crate open and I'd see/confirm that she really actually likes it...and I'd go from there. But your other option if you need to confine her to a smaller space at first is to fence off an area for her that is open...you could use various things to do this; an Iris pen is great! Or a small bathroom? As far as schedule...maybe start out on the first schedule...but keep increasing her 12:30 time by 15mins or 30mins until you start getting closer to 2:30...I think she'll do just fine :)! |
Hi and welcome to YT, I trained my lulu in a crate when she was a pup and it worked out great. I highly recommend it. You can always stop using it when she's trained. Lulu stopped using hers around 9months old. I have done it both ways and prefer the crate when I'm not home so I know she's safe. Good luck with your yorkie! |
Our Mitzi is 16 weeks and loves her crate. She will go take toys in it and nap in it on her own. Sleeps in it at night. As long as she likes it I will continue using it. I think she likes having her special place. I hope it goes well for you! They are sooooo much fun! |
crate training and comfort 1 Attachment(s) Danielle and yippee, here comes Juliettte.. maybe a Romeo in your future???? We find that crate training is excellent as long as the dog does not feel like she is being punished. Jaz has her crate, and inside the crate is her bed. The crate opens to a small flip out fenced area about 4 foot round. In this area she has water, chew toys, and her potty. She is comfortable there, and has access to everything she need when I am tied up at work. When I get home, I open the little fenced area, and she comes and goes at will into here "apartment". She feels safe, and freely goes into her crate to sleep, or when the cat comes to pester her. I hope this helps. Creating a safe happy place for Juliette now will result in comfort for both of you later. The only warning I have is that if you place her in this area, and she cries for you to pick her up, you will have to ignore her for a bit. Otherwise she will learn that you are trained rather than her. Please let me know what you decide, I learn something from everyone here. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/att...1&d=1436818651 |
If she is used to the crate, I would definitely keep up that training. There are times that they just need a "time out", not a punishment, just some time to chill. Anna and Willie do ok in a crate. Barney is terrible in one. However, I've noticed he hides under the bed or the couch when he gets stressed. I probably need to work on crate training him so that he has a chill spot when he needs it. |
I have to admit that Bella trained us in this respect. She didn't like the crate so now she sleeps with us. But she really doesn't have anywhere that she "retreats" to, so I guess she is okay with it. |
