First day with 8 week female yorkie!!! Please help! Hi there! This is my first post. Not going to lie kind of confusing using this site at first. I really need your help. I just brought home my baby girl yesterday. But I have a pet carrier she came in and she doesn't seem to like that so do y'all have any crate suggestions (links please)? And also because she's not confined to a space (her play pen arrives today) so she's been peeing and pooping everywhere. Any help on potty training? Is there a certain schedule? Also at night she cries. I woke up around 4 am to soothe her but she kept whining and I ended up having to sleep through it because I've read that sometimes you just have to push through it. Sorry for all the questions. She's my first puppy ever and I'm so stressed. I know having a puppy is a blessing and I just need some guidance! I want to be a perfect puppy mom! |
I would get a crate and make sure it is in your bedroom where she can see you and when she cries take her potty and then put her back to bed and ignore her crying unless she goes to sleep for a bit and then wakes up and does it again then take her potty and put her back. If you give them attention for the crying they will keep doing it. Eventually they will get the hand of it. She is still pretty young (reputable breeders generally keep there pups until 12 weeks) so her bladder control is very little so you must be patient. Are you wanting to train to outside or pads? You need to make sure she is eating well and know what the symptoms of hypoglycemia are and have nutrical on hand incase that happens. I would not give her free run of the house until she I potty trained and past the age of wanting to chew on things for her own safety. Congrats on your new pup. |
Get the book Yorkshire Terriers for Dummies. It has great information and will let you know what to expect. Puppies this small can get sick very fast from low blood sugar so make sure your puppy is eating well. |
Welcome to YT...My experience with pad training is...as puppies they were confined to a small area, pee pad at one end, bed at another end, food between the two. When I came home from work the puppy had free roam of 3 rooms of the house, doors closed to bedrooms and bathroom. When the puppy pooped or peed some where other then the pee pad I picked up the poo, put it on the pad, got the puppy placed her on the pad and told her, "poo poo on the pad" when she peed I took the pad, absorbed the pee from the floor, put the pad back where it belonged, got the puppy placed her on the pad with the pee and told her "pee pee on the pad. 4 yorkies through out a period of 12 years were trained this way, when they were 5 months old they were 100% pad trained, then I started to house break them , feed same time every day, walked in the morning (7:30AM) and when I came home from work (4:30) everyday, by 7 mos old they were 100% house broken. Hi - welcome to YT and congrats :)!!! Your pup is very young, so keep a very, very close eye on her; usually, they stay w/ their Mom until they're 12 weeks old...so this makes your pup a little more vulnerable. Don't change foods or anything like that. Have Nutrical on hand, just in case. Give her a something that either smells like you are her mom to cuddle up on. Make sure she is in a warm place no drafts. Next to your bed in a crate at nights so you can insure her everything is okay. And sometimes a radio can help also. Best thing to do with potty training is consistency. You will be taking her out often. After she eats or drinks and every hour for awhile. She will have you trained in no time. :). Keep us updated |
I'm new here too I'm new here too & also find it a little confusing. I agree with some of the others to limit the space she is in and make sure to let her out lots of times and definitely after eating or drinking. I use the crate for my Yorkie to sleep in and he sleeps in our bedroom. I had lots of issue with him at the beginning but maybe that's because I got him also at 8 weeks old. Since your pup is young, would buy a Snuggle Puppy for her. It has heartbeat technology and warmth inside. You can purchase it on Amazon or elsewhere, but this is the company information. I wouldn't stress on housebreaking too much; she is just a tiny baby. I would concentrate on making sure she is safe and feels safe, that she feels secure (being near you), make sure she has quality food, water, and remember...she is just a baby and everything is brand new--lots of things are probably kinda scary; don't let her out of your sight when outside!!! Enjoy loving your little girl---she's going to bring so much to your life! |

I am so sorry for taking a while to get back to everyone. I am having trouble navigating through this site! Every day is getting better. Update: play pen arrived! I've placed pads all over it so theres no place for missing. I want to train her for pee pads only. It's getting better! I'm going to try all your tips. Also, she cried more last night. Just ordered the Snuggle Puppy as suggested!! I can't wait for it to come in. I can't handle having another night of her whining. It hurts to hear my poor baby be lonely. But I try and get up when she first starts to whine to remind her I'm there. However, her stool has been a bit loose and quite stinky. Do you think it could be the treats i've been giving her? I'm trying to promote good behavior. Also I think she's been tooting...lol good thing we have our vet appointment on Monday!! |
